Found the source for my claim. Tom's Hardware tested FPS values for different processors on different games.
Crysis II
Mafia II
You can use those charts to see that in many cases the extra price isn't worth the performance gain.

He actually does. He would have played some BF3 if his machine would have played it well.

This, I might not talk about it much, but I do play military shooters

I didn't think that anyone took TH seriously.

The core parking hotfix wasn't used the last time I saw any of their vishera benchs

Eta: finch, I have an 8350 and a 7950. I streamed bf3 last night and was still playing at my locked 70fps. Stream was 720p with 10 quality at 30fps. I couldn't tell I was streaming at all.

TH is very hit or miss.

Most of the processor and video card benches should be taken with a grain of salt

Good lord. Anandtech is so much better in my opinion. They seem a little less biased.

I think they should all be taken with a grain of salt. That's why I try and read a few different ones to see whats consistent and pay attention to their setups of how they test.

That's why I like watching Linus videos. They do a great job at making everything as consistent as possible.

I like techpowerups reviews too

I've become quite a fanboy of Linus these days.

I like Tom's forums. Most, not all, of their experts there are helpful and provide accurate information. I also think Tom's best X Hardware for the money articles are a good starting point for builds, although those articles can be a step behind.

Their motherboard reviews, I don't like them. Judging a motherboard based on the performance of the overclock button? What respectable enthusiast is going to spend $200 on a motherboard and just use the auto-OC features?

Really, they're all flawed. I don't think any one site has the resources to produce a testing environment that every reader will be happy with, so you just have to look at multiple tests from different sites. You'll easily find the consistencies.

If I ever get rich, I'm going to build a large hardware test lab and do things right. And since I'm a bored rich guy I won't make any money. No advertisers to fear, no free test hardware from the big brands begging for praise. Straight-up objective data from more hardware combinations than any review site has ever been able to provide. I'll probably need to hire a staff too.

That's kind of sad that my dreams of being wealthy involve long hours running a not-for-profit test lab.

I also hate how they focus solely on gaming when it comes to CPU selection. I get that it might be their intent, but it's less helpful.

Ooh, yeah, but I want an even larger scale. Testing several of every brand of every model of all the hardware in as many hardware combinations and environments as possible.
