I love that the world is huge but it needs to be interesting

This is great news because we all learned from "No Man's Sky" that the larger a game world is, the better it is.

Because No Man's Sky devs totally have the reputation of Zelda devs, right?

To be fair, no one has the reputation Nintendo has, for good or bad. Just because it's Zelda doesn't mean it can't fall into the modern trap of "bigger game world = better game experience." I'm sick of open world games with little reason to be open world outside of open worlds are all the rage.

I have the game pre-ordered (on Wii U). I'm just saying that seeing a huge map like that doesn't stir up excitement but concern.

Same.

Plus don't have the time to explore the whole world.

itcher 3 wasn't "empty" . Haven't played much else to compare.

It was still too big. The hub world format is the way to do it, i.e. Deus Ex, Witcher 1 & 2, etc. It allows for more density, better world building, and proper pacing. You shouldn't have to populate your map with Points of Interest that are essentially the same 5 things. Zelda was fine as it was.

It's sad that "linear" is essentially a slur now

I do love how Deus ex does it. That world was so detailed.

Zelda basically invented Open World rpgs with OoT and then revolutionized rpg worlds with majoras mask.

Thus, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Like I said, I might be one of the few in this thread who played it, but if Xenoblade devs were involved that's a good thing.

The world in XCX was awesome. It was a lot of travel, but they handled the size and scope well. A lot of the draw came from creating very distinct places and enemies.

This is true.

I will say, Open world games are a problem from AAA devs, many feeling both empty and samesy. There's the occassional Tomb Raider or Sunset Overdrive that can change it up, but Watchdogs, Division, etc.

Love that game, but outside of the main story it was a lot of the same types of quests/enemies/roaming mobs.

The first Zelda was an open world game. Hell Ultima I in 1981 was an open world game.

Probably 1/10th of it will actually be accessible.

It would be semi believable if this was a GTA map or something, but this is Nintendo.

Nintendo has already said that all of it will be accessible.

Everquest would dwarf all of these, but it's a MMO that has been going for almost 20 years.

3 dimensions.

Crafting a "world", not a 2d picture

So the first Zelda and Ultima I were not "crafted worlds"?

So according to you a game cannot be open world unless it is in 3D?

Was gonna post this. Don't know where that original 360 sq km number came from but engineeringhyrule posts a lot on the zelda reddit. He made a long post a while back detailing how he used Link's assumed height and the ladder rungs on the Temple of Time to find the map size.

You mean witcher 3 reminds you of Zelda. Which was one of my first thoughts seeing the gameplay.
