its me, my wife, and 2 really young kids. Just wondering if the 14.5 is too small? anyone with the 14.5 really happy with it or does everyone wish they went larger?

I dont know anyone who has one, but its really small. They have them on clearance at the walmarts here in mo, and i was surprised at how small they are. You certainly couldnt get a brisket or a rack of ribs on one. I have the 18.5 and it is big enough for our family of 5 because you can cook a full sized anything on it. Turkey, brisket, pork shoulder, etc. Just have a lot more options with the bigger one, and the footprint isnt much larger.

I have two 14.5" weber smokey joe grills, two of the 18" Weber tabletops, a 22.5 weber kettle and a 22.5 WSM.
I wouldn't buy a 14.5" WSM. The 14.5 smokey joe has a very small cooking surface. The WSM may hold a chicken or small butt. I think you would have to cut a rack of ribs into three pieces and use both of the WSM's grates to get it to fit.
Another thing would be how much maintenance it would take to do long smokes. Adding charcoal and refilling the water pan (if you used it). I have done overnight cooks on my 22.5 WSM and have never had to add charcoal.
It would just be a taller version of this smokey joe.
I would at least get the 18.5" for $100 more. I have brisket in my freezer right now and it seems just as good as right off the WSM when wrapped in foil and warmed in the oven. IMO, it's better to cook more than needed than not enough. You can always do brisket or pulled pork quesadillas, tacos or sandwiches with the leftovers.
