Backstory: There was an old drive in that I went to growing up as a kid that is currently vacant. It was renovated around 2007. I am tossing the idea of looking into what it would take to buy it and reopen it.

Anyway, I had some free time at work today and started typing a menu of items I enjoy cooking and think would work well in a classic drive inn.

So I figured Id give it a trail run here to see if any of you would be interested in dining at my "restaurant"

Any feed back is appreciated. How are the Prices? I just threw random numbers I didnt really figure food cost into it yet.

I have many other ideas to add to the menu but haven't typed them out yet. The drive in was known for its malts and shakes so I would also have a desert menu but I haven't gotten that deep into my planning.

ETA: I got a few ideas from Food shows ex. Philly Cheese steak nachos and the Donut burger are from MvF at a Minor League park!

No blue cheese burger......no care.

Seriously........that a good start. Need much more planning before starting.

Failure rate on restaurants is high.

I am consulting with a friend who is in the food industry. My plan is to keep it simple, fresh produce, hand make as much as I can, and open a drive inn that is already rooted in my community so the name wont be hard to spread.

For lack of a better term. It was probably originally opened in the 50's by a man and his wife. They ran it until around 2006 when they sold it. It stayed open a few more years but closed about 2 or 3 years ago.

Do the very best onion rings and fries you can do. Par fry the potatoes so you can pull them out of the cooler and deliver a superior product.

Two and a half cents for chili is a pretty good deal.

Get the hamburger right. It's a drive-in and that's going to be the bread and butter. The first thing on the menu you posted was...

Grilled Stuffed Jalapeno Peppers- Jalapeno Peppers stuffed with Cream Cheese/Pepper Jack Cheese and Steen’s syrup Sausage, wrapped in Bacon.

I will never go to a new drive-in for the stuffed peppers. Maybe down the road when the place is successful, I'll hit it up for the peppers, but until then, get the burger right.

Plain*

So it closed in 2006, and again 2-3 years after? Maybe there is a reason? It's really hard to open a Mom-n-Pop drive thru diner type of restaurant. Even more-so if you have no commercial cooking experience or financial background. Research, research, research. Maybe go talk to the previous two owners and find out why they weren't successful? The local market may just not be there. Do you have a variety of fast food restaurants around? The average citizen would probably rather get a cheaper and quicker meal at a fast food place these days. Consider your market.

And yes, I would order probably order everything on that menu. But that won't make it a successful restaurant.

I do this when I grill with friends as an appetizer, I figured it could fit in on a menu like this. As I mess around more, more burgers and other staple foods will be added.

The Original owners sold because they were retiring. It was connected to their house, the last owner was someone who like me wanted to preserve the classic dining spot that we grew up with. But also bought it for his photography business. I do not know the reason why he closed the drive in down but I know how to get in touch with him.

The diner is located right outside of down town Abbeville, there are no fastfood places in the area and could draw a good lunch crowd from businesses in town (Other places have done this and had good results.)

Id like to keep it pricing competitive, If I can keep the prices around fast-food prices but have a better quality food alot of the problem will be solved. The biggest problem is parking. The building currently only has about 10 stalls to park and limited parking on the side where the other business is located

Sounds good to me.

Also try fresh cut french fries, since you'll already have the fryers for the onion rings.

Maybe add a chicken fried steak or something.

But all in all, sounds like a place I'd check out.

plane-those things that fly in the air
plain-a hamburger with nothing on it.

I hope you won't be cooking these burgers well done. Give people the option of whether they want a hockey puck or not.

I can't really see myself sitting in a car eating this, but maybe that's just me. Other than that one item, everything else sounds pretty standard for what I imagine a drive in would serve. You could maybe even add special hotdogs and whatever that popcorn is they have at the movie theaters.
