drank a 2011 Mencos Rioja last night with dinner

we both really enjoyed it

I'm currently trying to educate myself more with wine and I'm doing that by drinking certain regions every month, with this month being Spain

so far, so good for Spain

Congradulations to the Admin who decided to unanchor the thread.

That's a really interesting way to do it. It's essentially what we do when we travel to wine countries/regions, but much cheaper.

Why would this have been anchored?

I'm actually going through a trying different grapes phase. I'm on a syrah /shiraz kick right now.

I like Spanish wines...reds....garnachas. Any recs, guys?

I've enjoyed these reds from Spain

Torra D Golban 2009 Crianza

Vina Real Crianza 2009

Yaso 2012 Toro

Don't think any of them were more than $12 & got them all at Costco

A pretty good Lirac from Acquistipaces or Keife (we can't remember ).

Liracs have all be interesting. ..albeit often tough to find in New Orleans.

It will be paired with nothing since we already did Tunisian for dinner at Jamila's.

Lirac may be next to Chateauneuf, but it never quite delivers...though they are generally much cheaper.

Bump for an upcoming event.
I'm going to an Italian wine tasting Tuesday at the Windsor Court Grill Room.
They recently scooped up the Somm from Stella, John Mitchell. He's young but knows his shite.

Looks like a pretty killer lineup and a fair price at $40/.

I've had the Occhipinti and the Ama.

This is a nice event for any NOLA folks. Think they still have a few spots left of anyone is interested.

I've been enjoying some wine lately, whoever put up the 15 best cheap wines for 2014 really helped me out. I have a quick question about decanting, which is how long should I let wine breath? Usually I just open the bottle and drink it, which I assume is not correct at all but I've never been a wine drinker before this year

It's pretty good. I snagged a few bottles a few years ago when the family's niece came to town showcasing the wine.

I really enjoyed all the Occhipinti wines I've tried. They really do a great job using traditional and natural processes. You can find their wine in several of the nicer NOLA wine shops.

Depends on the bottle. Cheaper wines need less, IMO. U can typically find a suggested decant time online for different bottles....

That lineup is smoking. The Mascarello and Poggio di Sotto alone are worth the price of admission. I hate wine tastings in general but that is pretty cool. And John's a good dude.

for decanting, i would experiment ... most people will say decant "big" wines simply because more expensive wines are usually more complex ... general rule of thumb ... that said, buy 2 bottles and drink one without decanting and then drink one that is decanted ... if you have the time, decant it ... it certainly won't hurt ... side note, simply decorking the bottle is not the same as decanting ...

Don't know about bes ever but it's a solid value bottle. Good wine at a good price. Also pretty sure it's a requirement of all restaurants in the Bywater to have it on their list these days.

For a real nice bottle of wine, I will always double decant (meaning decant, then funnel back into the bottle and repeat) and probably let it sit for an hour.

For everyday drinking wine, I usually decant and sit for a half hour.

You can also run the wine in a blender for a few quick pulses and it will decant just fine. Sounds dumb, but it does the same thing as an aerator.
