Yes, I saw the plans for the building last month. And the Mudbug is a perfect example to my point. They aren't going to make it selling nothing but cat piss and orange juice in a place like Thibodaux.

Why, then, are the vast majority of breweries so mediocre overall?

Is this a valid opinion or what?

I'm not happy that some places aren't that great, but I'm glad that people are opening places and the public are more than willing to support the local places.

As the beer scene matures, the pretenders will be forced to either shite or get off the pot.

They stay busy though, on a Thursday -Saturday night it is packed. It has become the "cool" college/craftbeer hangout. No idea if it will sustain it but from where they started they are doing well. Although they seem to follow the standard mediocre beer and try to hit a home run with a specialty release.

Not as many as regular down the bayou people and college kids... they have their gimmick King Cake Ale which has become their most popular beer. Great for women and guys to say they are drinking "craft."

Because taste isn't in the tongue; it's in the mind. It's psychological. It seems to me that a "good" beer has more to do with marketing, hype and hip factor that actual taste. Just as a restaurant's success is more than just about the quality of its food, a brewery's success is more than just about the quality of its beer. You've got to get in peoples heads as well as their mouths. So, in my opinion, lack of smart marketing is the reason so many mediocre breweries are out there. A brewery, even with an average tasting beer, that has a healthy marketing plan and budget can go far.

Absolutely

It's like anything else. You can cater to the Least Common Denominator and exploit that market, you can target the Least Common Denominator (i.e., specialty beer elitists), or try to fuse the two. I'd view Parish as the third category. Produce a maven beer, but also pay the bills with lowbrow product. And your consumer base ultimately dictates your approach. A place like Hill Farmstead or The Alchemist would die here. Frankly, they don't produce beer that will sell to the masses in LA. And that's true in other places as well.

tl;dr there are mediocre breweries because people support them because of a number of contingencies

If only there were more people who would start a business to lose money. Think how good beer and other products could be.

Well said sir. You are one of the few who had the courage to call a spade a spade...

I had a few long time mavens from California together a few weeks ago and did a blind taste test of their beloved Calif. Beers....I literally blindfolded them so they could do anything but taste and smell....hop delusion and hoapdillo finished 1 and 2 respectively.

Because it is VERY easy to make mediocre beer. I know this from experience.

If your mavens can't tell the difference between maltadillo and top tier CA IPAs, then your mavens suck.

Finally someone who gets it!

Most mavens are only mavens in their own minds.

To be clear, I am not a maven.

your little made up anecdotal evidence means nothing, but perception, whether it be from hype or negativity, certainly does have an affect on how we view things

the more breweries that open just means that more average breweries are going to exist, and average certainly doesn't mean bad

and the craft beer bubble is going to pop eventually and a lot of these "mediocre" breweries will either go under or be acquired by larger breweries
