Went to Whole Foods today to pick up a tri tip to smoke since they're the only place I know that carries them. The conversation went something like this:

Me: I'll take a tri tip.

WF: We've stopped carrying them because no one was buying them.

The tri-tip will take off when someone comes up with a better name for it. It's an underappreciated cut.

Check Costco if you're a member. I think every location I've been to usually has it... Then again, I've never been to any of the locations in the South.

He gave you a line of shite! He just didn't want to do it! Ask him if he's got top sirloin steaks? If he says yes, ask for the "cap" off of the top sirloin. That is a tri-tip.

Every meat dept carries top sirloin steaks

Costco has been hit or miss, and more miss lately. Had them initially, stopped selling in La and Texas locations because "no one knew what they were". They have had them sporadically at Baton Rouge location lately, but not in the case. I've had to ask a butcher and they generally will wrap some 20 minutes later.

I did find 2 at Ralph's Supermarket by Pelican Pointe. They were $3.99 lb and good quality. Only difference is they did have a half inch fat cap on one side. Stopped there yesterday and they had none......

Yes they are big here in California. A lot of seafood and tri tips on the grills out here.

I'm cooking a tri tip tonight as a matter of fact. Got a choice for $4 a pound at Ralph's.

We always have them in Costco in North Alabama, however they cost 9 bucks a lb.
