I find cilantro to be an indispensable component of the kitchen. I use it in many recipes, from soups to grilled cheese sandwichs to pesto. It's the most delicious herb in the world, IMHO.

However, I can simply utter the word "cilantro" and some people gag in disgust. What gives with this spice?

I think I read somewhere that genetic variation factors into this...

Maybe it doesn't come down to purely genetics, but I think it factors in. I, for one, despise cilantro and I eat literally anything. I'm not picky at all and cilantro is a total turnoff for me.

I used to think cilantro tasted like soap. Nowadays it doesn't taste that way to me at all. In fact I think it gives a fresh taste to foods it's added to.

That's an interesting link. So there's a genetic component to this!

Also racial. Indians, Hispanics and Middle Easterners prefer it and other groups, not so much.

I love cilantro and can eat it right off the stem.

Some people have a genetic mutation where cilantro tastes like soap. These people should be put down to prevent this from spreading. Cilantro is delicious.

Cilantro is a dirty weed meant to appease the genetic poors

I agree. It's true it's popular in the Middle East, India and Latin America.

Maybe there's a method to the madness of open borders, after all.

I had no idea what it was the first time I fished a sprig out of some salsa at a Mexican restaurant many years ago.

Someone at the table told me it was cilantro, which was the first time I had even heard the word.

Now I buy a bunch almost every week. Love the stuff.

That's because it does taste like soap. You were right.

It looks a little like Italian parsley, but the two herbs could hardly be more different: Italian parsley is tasteless and IMO worthless in cooking, whereas cilantro is delicious and finds it's way into many recipes, and condiments

Maybe you should try growing your own. This is the perfect time of year to give it a try.

I have friends who do think it tastes like soap, and I've even heard "grass". I happen to love the stuff. It's like garlic for me. Whatever the recipe calls for, I'm putting in twice the amount.

Cilantro tastes like a mix between stinkbug, soap, and Hitler. The proper way to prepare it involves napalm or nuclear weapons.
