What's my next move, Scotch-wise?

I have never been a big scotch guy, but somebody told me Macallan 10 is a good entry point to single-malt. I liked it quite a bit. Then a friend gave me a little pull off his lagavulin (islay, whatever that means) 16 and I had to go get my own bottle.
Kind of enjoying this stuff. Where should I go next?

Oban
Aberlour
Balvenie
Glenmorangie
All have different ages and some special oaks to keep it interesting. I really enjoy Oban 14, Aberlour 16, Balvenie 14 year old carribean cask.
I don't remember the character of each area, but I know if you liked Macallan, these are all St least in the ball park (I.e. Single malt, lower on the smoke/peat).
I'm far from the scotch guy, so this is just my personal preferences.

Second the Oban and the Balvenie.

Islay is an island off the southwestern tip of Scotland. The whiskeys share a mix of smoke/iodine/seaweed/brine in their overall character.
Other good Islay malts to try are the younger bottlings from Ardbeg, Bowmore and Caol Ila. Hold off on trying Laphroaig until you try a few other bottles.

I'm impressed if you like lagavulin
islays are an acquired taste
I've gone over to Irish whiskys but my daily drinker scotch is famous grouse
good blend, good price. Gotta have a bottle in the cabinet that doesn't cost 60 bucks

You left out gasoline. Peat smoked scotch tastes a lot like gasoline.

Dalwhinnie 15 is my go to right now.

Just go straight for Laphroaig, you'll never look back.

Laphroaig 10 is a personal favorite but I wouldn't recommend it to someone just developing their taste for Scotch. Without building up an exposure and appreciation to these type of flavors Laphroaig will hit most people as a lingering glass of salty burning band aids.
When you are first getting into good cheese you don't start with Stinking Bishop, when you are getting into chili peppers you don't start with a Carolina Reaper. For most people the more extreme styles are more likely to turn them away than open up new enjoyments.

Everything this guy said.
Balvenie makes some really good scotches as suggested by others but they are going to be different than Lagavulin if that's what you liked.

Talk about an acquired taste. I've got a bottle of Laphroaig that's 3/4 full that I'll give you. I just could not acquire that taste.

Just got finished with these two. Both were excellent (non peaty) but I liked the Quinta Ruban a bit more. I don't think you can go wrong with either.
