What does Great Raft have that's good? Southern Drawl is terrible.

So judging by the comments here directed towards Ghost, should I assume West Coast style and/or filtered IPAs are out of style and 2nd tier now?

All their bombers are worth trying

Their farmhouse ales are among the best beers in the state

Uh, Grace and Grit, Commotion, All My Tomorrows, Old Mad Joy, Make Believer, Creature of Habit, Awkward Uncle and just about anything they Barrel age has been very good.

IMO their 2 worst beers are 2 of their flagships in Southern Drawl and Reasonably Corrupt.

They are a great brewery. Best in the state? That could be argued.

Parish is great, but with ghost inconsistencies recently and every time I walk into parish to drink 2 glasses of beer they ask for the rights to my first born child, I give my vote to great raft.

I don't think that is the problem people have with ghost. The problem is there is no reliability on what kind of beer it is, batch to batch. FWIW, i think ghost gets better with a few weeks age on it. Fresh i find it too alcohol hot.
But like others said, it tastes nothing like what it used to be. It's still really good, but it isn't on that greatness level it once was. The "juice" is no longer in the bottle. I've found that the absence of juice coincides with the release of their newer offerings. Opus first came out, it was incredible, and ghost started to fade (some say even before then). Next batch of Opus, even that changed a bit, but was still terrific, and the juice in ghost further dulled. Then the 3rd batch of Opus came out and it tasted nothing like the first 2, and it's juiciness faded. Coincidentally, within a couple weeks was GR day and the release of bloom and DDH Envie. Both full of juice. And now, the most recent batch of ghost with the same release date or close to it, of GR Day, and there isn't really any juice at all.

I don't know if that's planned. If they are trying to make each beer distinctly different or what, but you can't deny that ghost and even Opus have changed.

We'll see what future releases hold. I'll still do my best to try everything they put out.

I think beer that has a strong rubbing alcohol smell makes it 2nd tier.

1 Parish
2 Courtyard
Personal Preference

Parish is the best accessible beer. However, every time I go to Courtyard they have a new beer that is fantastic. It keeps me on my toes and keeps me going back for more.

Fwiw, college kids arent going to be hanging out at a brewery.

College towns are some of the biggest craft brewery incubators across the country.

Maybe so but its such a small part of the student population. If anything, grad students from my experience are just as strapped for cash as undergrads.

Drinking craft beer outside of your home is too expensive

Well, my experience is that we get a lot of grad students coming into Tin Roof.

Undergrads are I'm guessing 50/50 underage anyway.

Do they do press releases or anything? A simple "yeah our beer was terrible, so we decided to scrap the recipe and reformulate to make a good beer" type thing would be helpful.

Yeah, because I always see businesses say "our products used to suck, but we're doing better now."

Seriously, go by the taproom and try the beers. It's kid friendly. The pale ale is getting there. Juke Joint is perfectly drinkable now. It had a nice dank aroma when I had it the other day. This year's coffee porter is much improved. The stout is legit. Double IPA is coming soon. The amber is going away.

Domino's did just that a few years ago, and it paid off big. It's been called one of the smartest marketing campaigns ever.

Why wouldn't Abita be number 1?

Abita being #1 would be akin to Applebee's being voted the best restaurant in the state. Good food and well-known nationally. Why shouldn't Applebee's be called the best restaurant in Louisiana?

No way, not from me. We don't talk about it much but I love green flash palate wrecker as an example.

Nice to hear about the parade ground. Last years was so bizarre. It was thin and really drinkable. If they called it a strong brown ale, I don't think anyone would have complained about it. Glad to see it's back to being good.

Ivan is a great beer. Just take the wax off
