Does anybody else not like cream cheese laden king cakes? Didn't see them much growing up, and now it's everywhere. Far too many versions are like a cake with a bar of plain cream cheese just sitting there as if out of place, IMO.

Why did all the simpler and better balanced glazed with sprinkles varieties become sloppy icing and cream cheese bombs.

because most king cakes are super dry and more like bagels than the moist pastry they are supposed to be. filling them with cream cheese, fruit preserves, and sloppy icing offsets this.

I am super happy that I don't have to be subjected to the king cakes outside of NOLA anymore.

I think its the classic filling. Although I see alot more strawberry and cream cheese filling than anything else.

Filling isn't really the correct wording for a "classic" king cake though. There's just cinnamon and sugar baked into the dough. That goopy slop people put in them these days makes it a damn strudel.

Cream Cheese
Cream Cheese & Brownies
Cinnamon/Sugar & Cream Cheese
Strawberries and cream is pretty good, but it's more like they used a jelly as a filling
Pralines & Cream is really sweet, but good

King Cakes should not be filled. Ever. The End.

If a King Cake needs filling to not taste dry, it was not baked correctly.
