Either Randazzo's or Haydel's.
Gambino's king cakes suck (Metairie & BR). I would only order your king cake from the Nola area or Northshore. Baton Rouge king cakes aren't that good, except that I had Ambrosia one and it was decent. You'd think with the amount of Nola transplants there that they'd have decent king cake places.

Stupid question, do bakeries freeze the King Cakes before shipping? I'm debating on just hand delivering 400 miles away.

No.
They just make them in the morning and then overnight them that day.
Well that is the way the good places do it. I'm sure some of the cheap places ship cakes that are not fresh.

I've done Manny Randazzo's and Haydels in the past several years. Randazzos is the superior cake out of those two IMHO.
