Depends but El Tiempo would be my pick. I personally like the dive joints, especially the ones that sell breakfast.

I had some great food at Hugo's. It's more regional Mexican rather than Tex-Mex.

If you want to get away from the typical "El Tiempo, Ninfas on Navigation" talk, not saying that those two aren't delicious, but here are a couple that are "off the beaten path", so to speak.

La Guadalupana (great for breakfast, love their enchiladas mole)

Teotihuacan

Tampico - they're specialty is cooking a whole redfish to perfection. you get to pick out the fish you want in the case and they weigh it, and then prepare it.

Agreed.

I haven't had Chilosos, but maybe I'll try it some time. Its just hard to imagine myself venturing over there early enough to get breakfast tacos.

Love this place but it's a pacific coast Mexican joint. Probably not what the OP is looking for, but they have the best shrimp cocktail I've had.

Nah, I was pretty much looking for the whole gamut of places. This one definitely looks interesting.

Thanks for all the responses.

By "vibe" you mean you like going to the strip club next door after a few margaritas, right?

We went to El Real on Westheimer over Memorial Day weekend. It was mighty tasty. The grilled quail was excellent.

You can also have a few beers at the Hay Merchant before/after heading over.

I work out of the country and every time I fly back to the US my first dinner when I get home is El Tiempo filet fajitas. Make sure to drench them with the butter sauce that comes with them.

Also for you hole in the wall guys there if you are going north on heights blvd and take a right on 20th, there is a dump on the right about a block down called La Carretta. This place has the best chorizo breakfast tacos and ground beef tacos I've had. Wouldn't stray too far from that on the menu. Tuesday is ground beef taco lunch day. Like $6 for a taco plate. Bfast tacos are like $2 each.
