I boil crawfish all over the state and country and most people use dip.
This. I've seen it everywhere.
Not my thing.

I knew it wasn't you Gris. Just didn't realize the dip was so prevelant. Honestly, I've never seen it. Guess I need to get out more. To each their own. Cheers!

I rarely use it because I eat the crawfish too fast to dip and it buries the flavor, but on occasion, I'll put a tail or two in the dip to "cleanse the palate". I've seen the dip a lot, though. I see other folks using cocktail sauce, as well. Whatever works fer ya.

My wife's family is from Houma and they all dip, I've never done it and don't plan to

IMO the only reason to dip is if the crawfish aren't seasoned/cooked properly. I equate it to putting steak sauce on a fillet.

The potatoes and onions are great dipped in the sauce, too.

dipping ruins lives. i hope you didn't try any. i know it looks glamorous when you see guys with their spit cups, but honestly it's pretty addictive.

Have an up-vote, what-ever that means. That was my original point, to me crawfish stand alone with their flavor
They don't need help. When I saw the dip in crawfish country I was shocked. I had never saw that. Crawfish and mayo? Really?" To each their own

When we arrived I noticed mayo on the table. Hadn't seen this before.

Welcome to Acadiana, Yankee.

Color it with some Trappey's first. Money.

If it makes you feel any better, I didn't see this crawfish dipping sauce until 2 years ago. Just wasn't something anyone I know did when I was growing up.
I don't like Cane's sauce, so it wouldn't be my style. But whatever tickles the pickle.

fixed.
I mean, good God crawfish are spectacular on their own. Why screw it up with some mass produced condiment? It's the equivalent of ketchup on steak.

Because some people like them that way. They make the dip at the table in this instance. It's not a big deal. As long as you can eat them your way, why get upset?

It's a prairie cajun thing as stated above....I do it because of my Lake Charles roots. The best boiled crawfish shacks and restaurants all have this dip or the condiments to make it.
Hell, even Sammy's in BR has it....
I also do something "weird" with my raw oysters. I get a sauce bowl and mix red wine vinaigrette, horseradish, and lemon juice.....to me, it enhances the natural flavor of the raw oysters rather than coating it with ketchup and hot sauce.

Am I the only freak who uses mustard and Worcestershire (and a shake of Tony's) to make this dip instead of mayo?

Nah. It's done all over the place.
I've seen it done less in BR than anywhere though.
