In shopping around for a new range, researching, reading reviews and such I stumbled across this article about Viking Ranges founding and its impact on the city of Greenwood. Cool read, thought I'd share.
The American Interest
Sidebar: anyone have any personal insight on Viking appliances? I'm leaning toward them to outfit my kitchen.

Good read. I'm a fan of Greenville and the MS Delta.
We've been to the Alluvian a few times and have done a couple cooking classes at Viking. At one of which I over served myself and spilled wine on the dinner table when we all sat down to eat. Good times. They (the cooking classes) are pretty fun way to kill time with your SO if you find yourself having to do such a thing. Not overly educational but you pick up a few tips and you get to prepare a nice meal and use some badass kitchen gadgets and appliances.
Also, I have this thing in my shop/man cave.
It was gifted to me, and at the time I thought it may be the best thing I was ever given. Then I got it home and found out it wouldn't fit in my kitchen without having to do a complete kitchen renovation. No biggie, I would just move it to my shop where I do a bunch of my cooking anyway. So I did. Then came to the realization that I don't have a gas line ran out to my shop. So it's been sitting there useless for almost 2 years. FML

Heard nothing but good things just a bit on the expensive side. I will give them a look when it come times for me to overhaul my kitchen but my appliances are only about 6 years old but very basic and plain. The originals had almost all builders grade stuff so there's plenty for me to upgrade when the time comes.

I've got a 6 burner. It's 16 years old. Some maintenance has been required. Oven electronic igniters may need replacing every few years. Easy to do yourself. Just cleaned, for the first time, two gas jets/orifices on burners where the output seemed/was low. Now they kick arse!! I've been happy with mine. ~~ There are people who hate them for various reasons. Maybe the newer models have problems.
Seriously consider a dual fuel model. Gas burners with electric oven. Some claim they bake better. Others report no difference. I have o clue.
Cook top will light with a match in power outages. Gas oven will not.
Look at Wolf and Blue Star as well.
Luck!

Viking or Capital are the best, IMO.
Thermidor has a lot of burner issues and those damn brass nuts on the star burners seize up and turn a $200 repair into a $800 repair.

We've got them, Ro. Overall I like them (double oven/stove top, fridge, wine fridge). Can't say we have had any problems though. One of the ovens stopped working suddenly and had to have a part replaced (twice). Also had to replace one of the hinges on the fridge door. Other than that we have enjoyed them.

Ignitors fail a good bit, and they are almost universal. If you are a do it yourselfer, you can get a GE WB2x9998 ignitor for like $20 and change that part yourself in less than a half hour. It's generally $165-175 installed on a Viking.

Pacific Kitchen and Home in Best Buy (Lafayette) sells Viking products. They have number of Viking products on display.

Get an NXR range. You can put the 3k you save towards one of those fancy rabbit wine openers

Made In China has to be legit.
I have had a Viking cook top for 10 yrs with zero problems. If you can afford it always buy USA.

I have one, and I'm pretty happy wit it. It's older though, and as mentioned in the article, I'm not sure if the new ownership has adversely affected quality.
