i have $200 in gift cards to a local steakhouse. i plan on probably spending 120-140 on dinner. my question is, can i use some of the leftover gift card money as a tip or is that frowned upon?

Add the tip to the check and then hand them the gift card.

I see no problem with it, but some of the computer systems do not allow it. Personally I think that is the restaurant's problem and they need to fix it. It is no different paying with a gift car and paying with a credit card, restaurants just don't like coming off the as to pay the server

It just depends on the restaurant. Some allow it and some do not. I'd make sure you have some cash with you in case it is against their policy.

you can also call the restaurant ahead of time and ask..

No shame in the game.. It's money and you're spending it.

Most servers w/ a brain on their shoulders will accept the gift card as tip and just use it on the next table that pays cash.

ETA: Unfortunately there are some nimwits in the industry.
