The U.S. Justice Department is probing allegations that Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI.BR) is seeking to curb competition in the beer market by buying distributors, making it harder for fast-growing craft brewers to get their products on store shelves, according to three people familiar with the matter.

In the past few months, the world's largest brewer has rattled the craft beer world by striking deals for five distributors in three states. Many states require brewers to use distributors to sell their product, and once AB InBev buys a distributor, craft companies say they find that they can't distribute their beer as easily and sales growth stalls.

I don't think anyone who has been paying attention will be surprised by the allegations from craft brewers.

The whole ridiculous and anachronistic system of distribution is what is simply total horseshite. Do away with that and problem solved.

Is the correct answer. The requirement to use a distributor is bad for everyone.

Oh yeah, and AB can go frick themselves

i dont agree with this, however i do agree that its getting a little out of hand with the amount of breweries opening

i read here in the dallas paper last month that 17 breweries have applied for permits to open in the next 12 months.

now if you have a $500 setup in your garage you are considered a brewery.

quality over quantity. i dont see how all of these make money

Then you must really dislike wineries since close to 8,000 in the US compared to about 3,500 US breweries

Their is a craft beer bubble and the market will correct itself. However better laws distribution laws would allows them scale and control their product much better.

Impossible. How can more choices be anything but good for consumers? Good ones will survive, and bad ones won't. Consumers will decide. I think you will be surprised how many breweries the market will support.

Regulations that stack the deck against small breweries are a much bigger concern.

The mob charging a "tariff" to move products through their cities in the 20s-50s wasn't bad for everyone. The mob leaders and their families lived a pretty lavish lifestyle, forcing small business owners to pay just to be able to transport their products through an area, or either be shut down, or killed.

This. I can also guarantee that Louisiana will be one of the last bastions of distributor control due to a lock down on LA politicians. Anyone know a LA distributor? They are some of the wealthiest folks in town.

That's why we have a free market system. It will straighten itself out. Small brewery making shite beer isn't going to sell much beer. Unless you setup in BR....

Schilling donates a shite-ton to State Legislators.

Funny. He claims to be a free-market Republican type, yet he pays to try and keep the free market of beer sales stifled.

It's a pretty smart business move by Anheuser-Busch. It sucks for the consumer but from a purely business strategy it protects its interest.

Its GREAT for the consumer as it keeps the crap of what SOME people think is good tasting brew off the market. Most craft beers aren't very good. Come on over to Budweiser and TASTE the difference of a GREAT TASTING beer!
