Fast-forward to 2017, and there I was sitting in Mason’s newly opened sandwich joint, Turkey and the Wolf, in the sleepy Irish Channel neighborhood of New Orleans. The decor was garage sale bric-a-brac, the vibe was basement hangout, and Ween was playing on the speakers. I’d just polished off his riff on that turkey sub of his youth, which he made with ham (smoked in-house for ten hours), a thyme-and-dill-spiked mayo, sharp two-year-old cheddar, tart cranberry sauce from a can, and spicy arugula on a French roll. It was a study in textures, a superbly constructed sandwich that was more than the sum of its parts. I wished the ham-and-cheese versions my mom used to pack for me in my A-Team lunchbox were a tenth as good.

I've reported on it several times...
The OT Lunch crowd had even ripped me a new a-hole for overpaying '$11 for a basic deli sandwich for lunch' from T&W
They try and switch up the menu from time to time, but over the last year two of my favorites have been the NY Strip sandwich and the Meatloaf Sandwich.

The Italian American with either a wedge, the pig ear and cabbage, or a fried chicken pot pie are my go tos. When Tomato Season returns, that tomato sandwich they do is lights out also.

T&W is good, but it's so fricking overrated.

I don't get who they are paying off for this kind of publicity.

T&W is good,

I can get lunch there for the same price I'd get a poboy combo from any corner store.

Im actually pretty certain they dont have PR, at least not one of the traditional power house food PR firms. Of which there are under 10 that 90% of southern chefs use.
Instagram has really changed food reporting and trend spotting, etc...

It's been in Food & Wine twice, and is now in Bon Appetit. It's good, but I don't know about "national attention" good.

I'm just talking about locally. I don't see all these people flocking there daily and raving about it. For the most part it's never ever packed or busy and usually just people from the neighborhood biking or walking over to get a decent affordable lunch.

It has Beard nominations and several best new restaurant nominations/wins....yep, no one is talking about it

Meh
Locally it's not like people are flocking to the place or that it's over priced... well doesn't seem that way to me.

It was nominated for a James Beard award. New Orleans is in the Big East of regions for the Beard awards though.

Wut
Read your headline again mate

Man, I guess I mean around drinks and amongst friends.
Also I walk or bike past the place several times a week. I just don't see the 'headlines' creating a buzz to the place like you would think.

A sandwich shop being named "Bon Appétit Mag's '2017 best new rest in America'" seems pretty overrated.

Because people in New Orleans treat it as it is, a good spot to grab lunch. It's not what all of these articles are trying to portray it as.
