Thoughts on Nespresso machines?

I drink coffee all throughout the day. My wife only has a cup or two in the mornings and then switches to tea at lunch and the afternoons.

I really enjoy the concept of a quick cup of coffee or two without having to brew from the drip machine. The Keurig is not for me.

How's the Nespresso? Do they make good cups of coffee?

I haven't had a Keurig "pod" that was worth a damn.

I'm inquiring if Nespresso makes a good cup of coffee. I like the idea of these single cup machines (like the Nespresso and Keurig) as I hate to make/waste coffee in the afternoon.

I was given one as a gift. I'd use it more, but it used to be that you could only buy the pods on their website, and it was a PITA, so I just stopped. Now it sits in my closet. It makes decent enough drink. I still use the milk frothing device that came with it. That little thing is awesome.

I'm a coffee snob. I generally buy fresh beans from Whole Foods, grind it immediately before brewing, then use a French Press.

I say all of that to lay the foundation to say: it's fine. We have one at the office. I use it. It's not nearly as good as a brew at home, but it's astronomically better than what you'll generally have brewed for you.

I have a Nespresso at home and in my office. It's completely different than a Keurig because it's a pressurized espresso style machine, not a drip coffee brewer. For the convenience/ease, it's a decent quality shot of espresso. It has a place in my kitchen alongside a fairly high end ceramic burr grinder, quality manual espresso machine, and about 15 other ways to make coffee...but it gets used at least 4 days out of 7 b/c: machine is ready to go in 30 seconds, pods require no cleanup or prep, and it produces a decent shot. On a busy morning, it is a godsend. Esp since I live in a town with no decent espresso and a 25 mile commute....

Agree with the prev poster who likes the Nespresso milk frother. It is the single most-used item in my kitchen. Hot milk makes any sort of coffee better.

I have an espresso machine from nespresso. You can hack the pods and use fresh espresso grounds. Nespresso and Keurig aren't even on the same level. The nespresso pumps out a solid espresso.

For coffee I just use a french press.

My biggest issue with Nespresso is the size of the pods for pulling a shot of espresso. It's a very low coffee:water ratio. That means you are over-extracting. It's convenient, and it's probably not absolutely terrible. It is just a terribly expensive way to make a sub-par espresso. That said, I'm admittedly a coffee snob and roast my own beans.

I keep one of these in my office at work.

If you haven't tried then why comment on it? You don't know what you are talking about.

Finding your preferred roast from Nespresso or other companies and adjusting your water will provide an espresso drink that is superior to most chain coffee shops while saving money and time.

The problem is it's still just 5-6 grams of pre-ground coffee. That's half the weight of a standard espresso shot.
I have tried it. To me, it is very sub-par. I understand I don't have the same standards as the general public. I get that it is a convenience factor, and it has its place. I am personally not a fan of the product or the concept.

The one at my house get used alot. Yes, the pods are puchased online, but they ship quickly. It works out to about $.80/pod. Our monthly cost is usually $110 which sounds like a lot but it's still less than $9 a day during the workweek the wife was spending at Starbucks.

I've had drug habits cheaper than that.

If Keurig is not for you then I would stay away from Nespresso. Being forced to buy their capsules (averaging about 80 cents each) would piss me off. Here's what I recommend if you really enjoy espresso coffee:

I have a similar model (Delonghi ESAM5500B) and it's performed really well with no major maintenance needed going on 5 years. And it takes whole beans which I buy in bulk so in the long run I save money vs. nespresso.

We've had one for about 3 years now and love it. Super convenient. Super fast. And, the quality of the coffee is very good. I drink the Arpeggio. It's the purple pods. I also buy fresh beans and grind them to do pour overs on the occasion. I like both.

Are the automatic machines loud? The nespresso is very loud especially at 5a when the family is sleeping.

I looked into the Jura Micro which is about the same price.

Atleast when you buy a bag of weed, you don't have to get the overpriced bottle of water and banana at the counter or leave a tip.

Unfortunately yes, very loud. Beans grinding, pumps working, random clicks. Not a quiet machine.
