The reason that people from Shreveport and Lafayette use crawfish dip.

It seems as though this may be a direct result of bland and dry crawfish resulting from using the ice chest shaker method as opposed to the soak method of cooking.
I never thought about there being a connection between these two phenomena, but it seems reasonable that they could be related.

I have always used vinegar/seasoning as a "dip". We have always boiled/soaked.

Could you expound further on this dip? The only crawfish dip I have seen was mayo based.

Some people would use crawfish dip on the best tasting crawfish you could imagine.
I have eaten crawfish from Shreveport to Belle River, and seen dip used.

Saw a food show last week They were in Breaux Bridge...dude was dippin' away with his crawfish. He liked it. More power to him.

I like using dip for my potatoes. Usually just some mayo, ketchup, and a bit of hot sauce.
No point in dipping a crawfish in dip, since you basically cover your fingers in the dip and that's all you taste.

I grew up in the Shreveport/Bossier area and never once did I see people using "crawfish dip" until I moved to Baton Rouge for college. Don't put this on NWLA people
We did a boil a few weeks ago in Shreveport with school friends and the people who requested the dip were those from Baton Rouge area. We used mayo, ketchup, lemon juice, salt, and garlic powder. Pretty much like Cane's sauce but with black pepper and worcestershire.
ETA: That said, dipping crawfish boil potatoes in crawfish dip is fricking delicious.

I'm in the same boat. Is this an old TD wise tale?

Maybe they're trying to cover up the fact that crawfish taste like absolute shite because they live in mud.

I don't know what it is but the butthurt with different crawfish cooking recipes, methods, accompaniments etc. is stronger than most any food. I always get a kick out of how people associate X place with X way of doing something with crawfish. I've read how North LA was the only people that did the sprinkle. And yet the first person I knew around here that did it was as coonass as they come. You can get "dip" with crawfish from Mermentau to Monroe. Lake Charles to New Orleans. Don't like the dip? Don't use the dip. I personally rarely have time to drag a crawfish tail thru any type of sauce. It's a full fledge 20+ crawfish per minute machine gun assault going on. But I do like to drag a tater thru some salve and will dip a crawfish here and there. Also chicks love the dip and people who aren't generally accustomed to inhaling multiple pounds of crawfish love the dip. So let em dip I say.

I dont see any butthurt in the OP. I was simply making an observation and connecting a couple dots. I could be off-base. It has happened before, albeit rarely.
I will say that some of the responses to the OP contain a level of butthurt.

I can see Mrs. Balls running the stop watch hollerin' "Ready, Set, Go!" while you try to best your prior record.

There's a whole lotta butthurt on the subject of crawfish cooking methods and dip vs no dip. Enough to make the butt salve people rich(er).

Never seen the dip in Shreveport so not sure what you're talking about. Ice chest shaker, yes, but not dip.
Only person I've seen make and use a dip was from franklin.

Cane's sauce
FACT, Canes sauce is a direct copy of what people from Lafourche/Terrebonne having been using as a seafood dip for 50 years.

I've never dipped a crawfish into anything other than a lemon that was boiled with it.
