Wife and I went last night for a quick bite before some drinks at Lock & Key. Sat at the bar, had a French 75 and a Gimlet. Drinks were decent enough.

Ordered a $22 cheese platter. It came with cheddar (their house made, I assume?), a goat, and a blue. Some raw, thinly sliced, watery red onion and soggy green apples, barely spiced pecans, and toasted baguette. No cured meats, mustards, or pickles. For $22, it was a complete freaking joke.

No idea what the rest of the menu is like, but based on this experience were not super jazzed to give it another shot.

Horribly overpriced cheese and charcuterie boards are very quickly becoming one of my biggest restaurant annoyances. I appreciate the need for a markup, but when you charge $25 for something I can, and do, routinely put together at home for $5, that's just treating me like an idiot.

Idiots love cheese served on wood with fruit and meat.

Which is why I order other apps at restaurants now.

My wife and I stupidly ordered the grande cheese and meat plate at an Italian restaurant in NOLA. I think it was around $100. We damn near died trying to eat it all. That's way, way to much cheese to eat.

Most restaurants have no clue how to put a cheese plate together much less when to serve it- which should be after the entree and before desert.

Not to mention the horrible cheeses being served.

Meanwhile, City Pork is charging less and filling the damn thing with house smoked meats and their own pickles.

Mmm...smoked duck breast.

Funny. My first time there went exactly the same. Got the cheese plate and laughed at it.

It hasn't really impressed me more as I've returned

Correct.

With a good bottle of red, grapes, and some other type of fruit.

These people eating meat and cheese spreads as apps are hilarious.

We usually get them with drinks, not as an appetizer. Try the one at City Pork. It's borderline ridiculous.

The meat board at Toups Meatery in New Orleans is nothing short of glorious.

This right here. It's just a matter of assessing a restaurant and whether or not to order a charcuterie plate. Many places in NOLA do an excellent job of putting them together.
