Had my first Sucre king cake this morning and was disappointed. I had higher expectations. While I can appreciate not overdoing the cream cheese I could hardly tell there was a layer folded in.

Thinking of trying Maurice's next. Anyone have any recs? The Ponchatoula and the Bananas Foster sound intriguing. Bananas foster may be Too sweet?

This.

I don't think I've had one yet. They look nice but I always thought they probably wouldn't taste that great.

Really pretty, but they recommend warming them. Mainly, because they are dry and stale tasting.

The Sucre cake is pretty in a 14-year-old-girl sort of way. It is too smooth, too shiny, and overall kinda boring. For uppity king cakes, I think Gracious wins by a long shot. It's a brioche with a faint ribbon of chocolate folded in.

The cochon Elvis cake is an overly sweet, sticky mess...

I agree about Sucre .. I think the best king cake in the city is from Debbie Does Doberge.

I highly recommend Dong Phong king cake. You can get it at Pizza Nola in Lakeview if you are not up for the drive to the East.

Agreed. Place sucks across the board. Overrated on a District Donuts level.

My favorite king cake is Antoine's in Gretna. Their plain unfilled one is even righteous.

She makes king cakes???

Put me in the pro sucre king cake column. I thought they were bad years ago when they first started making them but they are better now. Warm it up just a tad and it's delicious.

What R2R said. I'm a lowly BR native that hasn't tried them all but the best king cake I've had was from Antoine's in Gretna. Manny Randazzo's is 2nd.
