This morning was a cool 49° and I felt like some fresh orange juice so I went out in the yard and pick about fourteen or fifteen oranges off of the blood orange tree. Came in and rinsed them off and began thinking that a nice breakfast would go well with fresh squeezed OJ so I put some bacon on to cook slowly.

Oranges cut in half.

All of these are indeed blood oranges but they really just begin to get bloody(red)in January. They are very delicious and sweet by now. Last month I tried a couple and they were still really firm and a bit tart.

I do have an electric juicer but I chose to go old school and use this juicer that belonged to my mother.

A mix of bloody and orange juices

Bacon cooking slowly while I juiced the oranges....... Mmmmmmm........... smells fantastic!

Here's a funny one..... My chickens basically have stopped laying for about six weeks now and I'm just putting off killing them to cook. Last week I was out in the yard having a cold beer and talking to a friend on the phone. He had chickens in the past and I mentioned that mine had quit layin and was putting it off dispatching them. A couple of days later I was checking on them or giving them scraps and notice a big fresh egg in the laying nest. Lol...... Two days later there's four nice beautiful eggs in the nest. I guess they overheard what I said and decided to get with the program and lay or be dinner.

So, I felt like a few fresh sunny side up eggs.....

Add a couple of slices of buttered wheat toast and it was time to eat!

Can't forget that glass of chilled blood OJ!
Oh, I ended up with between 36 and 40 ounces of fresh juice from those 14 or 15 oranges.

Gotta love fresh squeezed juice. Did you save some or drink it all?

I know it seems weird, but my parents had chickens for a few years and they would "go on strike" for random periods (sometimes months at a time). They had about 10-15 at any given time and just randomly, the chickens would stop laying eggs and then start back again. They never knew for sure what would cause it but they speculated it could have to do with diet and/or extreme temperatures.

Just FYI - in case they "strike" again, it may be worth it to wait it out again.

BTW - great looking breakfast. I'm jealous for sure.

How long does the fresh juice stay good? And can it be frozen?

I was thinking about juicing a bunch of oranges but didn't know the best way to keep it.

How's that copper pan doing?

My dad has two and raves on and on about them but I can't get past the idea that they're just a gimmick.

Are they anything different than a nonstick pan that looks copper?

No, I didn't drink it all myself. Put some in the fridge for the kids. Not worried about not having enough. Still have a couple of 2 or 3 hundred blood oranges and the Hamlin tree is still loaded.

Never tried freezing the juice here as it usually doesn't last long. I have given many oranges away.

I was surprised how well it works. One of the gifts I got my wife for Christmas was the square deep fry w/basket one(Sam's had that and the 12" round both with lids for like $50.00)to replace a aweful looking Magnalite pan she would fry stuff in. Loves the deep one and I tried the round to do the eggs in and it's very nonstick. Probably could cook an egg with no oil or butter. We'll see how long the last but looks good so far.
