Going Friday night with my fiance and were really looking forward to it.

I looked up the thread from January and all it was was people's opinions based on the website and price. Does anyone have any real experience with it?
---------------------------------------------------------

My Review:

Square Root was hands down the best dining experience I've had for as long as I can remember. We had the 830 seating last night and arrived a few minutes before 830. Walking up to the restaurant I noticed that no one else was there. They told us that we were the only ones that had seats that night. Everything they put in front of us was incredible. The pozole(sp?) had octopus and pork belly, the magical muffalatta was awesome, there wasn't anything that I didn't like. One of the craziest things was fried chicken cotton candy. it wasn't sweet and tasted just like fried chicken! At the end of the meal, they gave us a copy of the menu and it was signed by the chefs and waitress. We just did the tasting menu and not the drink pairings. I know some of yall said tip was included in the $150, but it didnt appear that way. After drinks and tip, our bill was about 470. Yeah it was expensive, but it was worth every penny.

After dinner, we ended up at the bar upstairs. Chef Lopez and Austin were up there doing prep work in the bar area. So we got to hang out and talk with them until we felt like leaving around 130am. They let us have some fresh "face bacon" and gave us a backroom tour of their facility. Those guys along with the rest of the staff were a class act and as friendly as they could be.

Bottom line: if you have the opportunity and the money to go, do it. Don't think. you won't regret it.

Did the tasting menu for jazzfest. Was pretty fantastic. Not cheap though. Have not gone in for a regular dinner though.

The food was amazing. Presentation is what they hang their hat on. Bring your American Express.

Yup. I had a fun experience there. You'll be there on the weekend so you'll get the extended version with more courses, perhaps up to fifteen. I was there on a weekday and it was only nine. I had the drink pairings with it, and the tab was over a couple hundred bucks. With Peche, I'm compelled to go there every time I'm in New Orleans, but not so much with Square Root, although I think that everyone should give it a go at least once. Not sure how much time executive Chef Lopez spends there, but the night I was there he was in the kitchen actively cooking and was personally serving and explaining some of the courses. Each course is small, focusing on the modernist avant-garde molecular gastronomy aspects if you're into that sort of thing.

Please report back. At the time I was talking about this place here, no one had yet gone. Seems like that's still the case, so I'd love to hear someone else's opinion.

I definitely expect it to be good but how special of an occasion (for us normal folks) are we talking here? Round your bill.

Went late Friday night for a nightcap upstairs. Nice setup on the balcony. Drinks were good. Ordered two cheeses for desert. $8/each, but was worth it. Nice portions and came with full cheese board accompaniments. Pickled vegetables, nuts, fruit, flatbread, etc.

Went last Thursday after the NOWFE Vinloa tasting (which will probably be the last time I attend the Glazer/Republic suck-fest it's become.) I'm a big fan of these guys and usually visit route 2 out of every 3 times I go to NO. Thought this place was outstanding, but you have to know what you're in for. I waited for the right group of friends to align to eat there (no wives), and it made all the difference. Being open-minded is a must. Outstanding service. (Rye as the expo/waiter and the Sommelier are good people.) They give you a copy of the menu detailing what you ate and the playlist song associated with that course at the end of the night to take with you along with a breakfast muffin like Gramercy Tavern which I thought was cool. I loved it.

I have been twice - once with my wife once with clients.

After the first trip with my wife, a friend who's into the whole molecular gastronomy thing suggested something. He said that if you drink a cup of coffee - black or just a bit of sugar - no milk - it will light up your senses more and the food will be better.

Drink about 90 mins ahead of time to make sure it's not lingering on your palate.

I did it with the client experience and I did notice I could distinguish tastes better.

Of course, the food is fascinating to watch what comes out and the novelty factor is high. So it might have been the caffeine working but it also might have been I was less engaged with the presentation and was more interested in the food.

On both occasions I felt like the service lagged a bit but the meals were worth it. 8/10

No pics?!?

I know it's the slow season, but it worries me that y'all were the only people in there on a Friday night. They've got to be losing a ton of money.

They said the 6 oclock seating had a good turn out. but for some reason we were the only ones for the 830. I took a few pictures but i dont think they came out as good as I'd like them too. maybe ill figure out how to post em on here later today.

When they opened, the website stated the $150 was all-inclusive. Looking now, the website no longer states that, but I do believe that's still the case.

Solid review. I'm looking forward to trying this place soon.
