Spinoff Thread: Worst "Cajun/Louisiana" Restaurant Experience

Living outside of Louisiana for the past 15 years after having grown up there, I've had the chance to visit a lot of restaurants in lots of places that claim to be Cajun, Creole, Louisiana, etc. So few live up to full expectations, though some are reasonable. Others, however...
Worst: "Shrimp Jamablaya" in the Union Restaurant in Valkenburg, Netherlands. Rice with a dark brown curry sauce and pineapples.
Second Worst: Pearl's (local chain) in Oklahoma City. "Gumbo" tasted like Dinty Moore canned beef stew. "Shrimp Creole" tasted like spaghetti sauce. On the upside, our friends from Spokane raved over it & found it to be great.

If you're foolish enough to order anything labeled as "cajun" in a restaurant located anywhere outside of a 30 mile radius from Lafayette, then you get what you deserve.

This is why I don't order Louisiana food outside of Louisiana. My standards are way too high for it and I'm almost always disappointed

the worst is Boutins on Bluebonnet.
Every damn time i have to go there for some gathering i am disappointed.

I went to a "cajun" restaurant in a mall food court in Memphis one time. I tried the jambalaya and bourbon chicken on a lark. It was half-decent for mall food court Chinese, but fried rice =/= jambalaya.

Well, no shite.
"It's made in Oklahoma City?!?" "Get a rope."

Well, when you live an 8 hour drive or worse, a 10 hour plane ride from Louisiana, you take what you can get. Sometimes you find decent stuff, like in a different OKC place. The chef was from NOLA, and when he heard that our reviews were lackluster and that we found the food to be bland, he actually came out and chatted with us for ten minutes, then sent 3-4 comped dishes out-- all awesome.
Sometimes you just got to pick around a little pineapple and curry, though.

my favorite "worst" (in that I would order it again because it was terribly good in a completely inauthentic way) goes to the Cajun Chicken sandwich from Primanti Bros in Pittsburgh.

Look no further than a recently closed restaurant in Watson. I don't send food back but this food was completely inedible. I've never seen anything like it. A couple of weeks after I ate there it was closed.

Yes, we've just about given up. Last place we tried was a year or so ago in Buckhead/ATL. It wasn't too bad, but no better than I can make with a Tony's Chachere, Maw Papaul's, or Oak Grove mix at home.

Yup, Boutins on Bluebonnet. I have family members who always wanted to go because of the live music. I haven't been back since I ordered jambalaya and it had corn in it!

Agreed. Took my future wife there when we were in school. Food was shite. Absolute flavorless shite.

Outside of South La, it's foolish to even order Cajun food. They opened a "Cajun" restaurant in Waco on the River. It's called Buzzard Billy's (apparently he has a few locations in other states). My daughter's suite mates insisted on going there last fall; they were all freshmen and wanted to try a different place each Friday night. Since one was from California, one from Texas, and one from Arizona they had no clue just how bad it was. My daughter sent me pictures of each plate and asked me to identify what it was supposed to be. I only got one right; the crab cakes with a crawfish sauce. The etouffee looked like tomato soup, the Gumbo looked more like a dark brown gravy (didn't see much meat in it). When I made a trip up there I had to see for myself; just went to the bar and ordered a beer and watched the food they brought out. No way I would try most of it.

How dumb are you for ordering "cajun" food in the Netherlands? I would be getting authentic Dutch cuisine everywhere I went.
Also, Food & Beverage board.

Authentic Dutch cuisine is pretty nasty.

I was in Bay City, texas. Driving by I saw a sign that said Best Gumbo in Town! at the Bay City seafood restaurant.
So I'm a little homesick and figure what the hell.
Order the "gumbo". Put the spoon to my lips.
One bite later, I got up and left. I wouldn't feed that "gumbo" to my dog. It was an insult to gumbo. I wouldn't feed it to a starving hobo.

that seafood place off the interstate in Lake Charles that's always packed. Been there twice. I don't get the appeal. Maybe just opportunistic location?

Yeah, fricking Dubai. Didn't have a bad thing during the meal actually.
