LA State Rep. Henry Burns, a Republican, says you shouldn't be served your yuppie craft beer to fuss over unless you have a designated driver, with a valid LOUISIANA drivers license.

quote:

What Burns proposes in HB 132 is to ban bars and restaurants from serving alcoholic beverages, unless a patron can provide proof that they have a designated driver. That designated driver must provide proof to the establishment that they’re a designated driver by presenting a valid, current Louisiana driver’s license.

By the way, I read the bill itself. Nothing in the bill addresses people with out of state DL's, people who have walked or biked to the establishment, or the intention of someone to call a cab.

Maybe they'll check for a designated biker? There have been a few times where I wasn't fit to ride my bike home from a bar. A designated biker would have gotten me home safe instead of letting me ride 3 miles out of the way to El Rey then calling my wife to pick me up.

That's stupidity. Is the bar then in charge of monitoring the "designated driver" to make sure he or she doesn't have anything to drink? You can't walk, bike, take a bus, take a cab?

God, can we just disband our legislature, or at least only let them meet every other year, like Texas does?

Does the designated driver have to sit with the person the entire time he's drinking? Does the bar keep a record of the name of the drinker and the DD? Maybe take a pic of DD's license? How does the bar know the DD hasn't been drinking all the while before coming to the bar? Give a breathalyzer test? There's no logic whatsoever in this crock. It's so pathetic that it's not even humorous. It's sad.

Burns says HB 132 defines a "designated driver," requires they have a valid driver's license and authorizes them to be the driver for more than one person at any given time. He says at the very least the proposal would get a conversation started.

Posted this yesterday on the OT. I got a kick out of it.

So the DD has to have more than one passenger?

I'm a chauffeur. I hope this passes. I could make some bank.

We kind of do this. Amazing how much they can get done in such a short time.

A Regular Session is the most common type and takes place annually for the purposes of lawmaking and allocating funds. There are two types of regular sessions:

• General
- Convene in even-numbered years at noon the second Monday in March
- Last no more than 60 legislative days
- No new taxes, tax increases, exemptions, exclusions, deductions, credits, rebates, incentives, or abatements may be introduced or enacted.

• Fiscal
- Convene in odd-numbered years at noon the second Monday in April
- Last no more than 45 legislative days
- No matters shall be introduced or considered unless they relate to fiscal (money) matters or local or special laws

Dude's from Haughton. This is a great example of much of rural N. Louisiana's understanding of drinking.

I'm not disparaging all of N. Louisiana, mind you, but this particular mindset is utterly mindboggling and it amazingly really exists in pockets of this state. Dude probably insured his reelection there with this pointless and completely futile stunt.

My niece got her DL in November. I told her the way to make some cash is to be a DD. She's already making some good money taking people to restaurants, dropping them off, picking them back up. I hired her for a high school reunion. She made good money during Mardi Gras season for balls and the like.

Each legislator only gets 5 non-fiscal bills they can file this session, and stupidity will still somehow run rampant.
