Get a guide book and if recommendations correspond to this sites they won't be bad. Too many to even list.

Gary Danko is good. Fine dining and pricey, but good.

Stay away from tourists traps near Fisherman's Wharf. Plenty good places a few blocks in and in China Town. Make sure to go into a China Town market to check out the food oddities sold.

It would be helpful to know where you are staying, if you have a car, and what budget you're looking for.

Staying at the Mark Hopkins in Nob Hill. I'm open to pretty much anything, but want to steer clear of the tourist traps.

I hear Cioppino is good; any idea where to get a good bowl of that?

Good location. It's pretty easy to get around in SF. When I was living in L.A., my home law office and my biggest client was in S.F. so I spent a lot of time there. You almost can't go wrong with food if you trust your instincts.

Agreed. But one place that I think is a must for anyone visiting San Francisco is Da Flora. It's a Venetian place in North Beach. The sweet potato gnocchi and duck liver are stupid good. They have the best Italian wine list I've ever seen. Tons of great Piedmont and Tuscan wines. And each individual wine has its own tasting note on the menu written by the owner, Flora. The protocol is to order your food and then ask the owner for a few wine recs and then make a choice from her recommendations. It really is a shame that this place is in North Beach because most people will assume it's another Italian restaurant tourist trap. But this place is the real deal. Best meal I've had in S.F.

Overall if I go back I think I would stick with dim sum trips around the city until I somehow got tired of it.

I lived there after LSU, and I have a great recommendation.

The Brazen Head. A steak joint that specializes in a NY Strip with a pepper cream sauce. No sign, no reservations, mafia style place with attitude and character so thick you won't believe it. No credit cards accepted, just a nutty, GREAT place.

ETA:

Tommy's Mexican Restaurant, on Geary, for margaritas and crazy good mexican. best Tequilla selection you will ever see. Cab it to this place and then on to Land's End park at the end of Geary. Hike the lower trail and you'll get the best view of the GG bridge you will ever see. There are some crazy ruins and it's just a cool arse park.

For northern Italian food, Milano is INSANE.

Land's End

Trail is to your right here, wraps around and the lower you get the better.

the #1 rule. Slanted Door has been mentioned; it's the best restaurant meal I've ever eaten in my life. And I've found that almost everything in North Beach is good; down Christopher Colombus Blvd.

Well I did enjoy going there for the view and to just get a fresh cooked crab with drawn butter.. Wasnt expensive and was great. I wouldnt call that a tourist trap. Of course I laughed seeing Joe's Crab Shack there.
