I'm going to San Francisco for work next week. I'll be staying near Fisherman's Wharf...any recommendations on food, beer, etc?

Most food in the Wharf area sucks. We had excellent sushi at Zushi Puzzle on Lombard.

One redeeming thing about the Wharf area: an In&out burger.

For food and beer check out La Trappe.

Get out of the wharf. For beer go to The Toronado....Pliny on draft for $5. Rosamunde Sausage next door to Toranado is a take out hot dog place and you can take it into Toronado. Pi Bar pizza is good and has a good beer selection. LA Trappe cafe is a good belgian bistro with a great beer selection. The bar is downstairs from where you enter. City Beer is great. Zeitgeist is a scrappy beer place. Monks Kettle is a good beer food place.

We enjoyed House of Nanking for family style lunch. Went at 2 pm to avoid the crowd.

If you find yourself in Sausilito, go to Sushi Ran. Best sushi I've ever had

We have stayed at the Fisherman's Wharf hotels a couple of times and have enjoyed it, but being used to the good New Orleans seafood restaurants, we were unimpressed with the restaurants around Fisherman's Wharf. A couple of our favorite restaurants in SF are Boulevard and LaFolie. We also enjoy going to Chinatown on one night. The Great Eastern is pretty good. Yuet Lee is a small casual hole in the wall but the food is very good. Real Chinese food as opposed to the Americanized version we usually get at home.

Since your down there anyway grab an Irish coffee at the Buena Vista. They say that is where they invented them. Really solid. Meg Ryan filmed a movie scene in there as well.

Head to China Town; go to the Li Po and have a Chinese whiskey with a ginger ale back. Do it before 5 or after 7:30 so all the hipsters are gone. Then to Brenda's on Polk (doesn't take reservations. Or you can kill two birds with one stone and head to the Mission and hit the Monks Kettle on 16th between Valencia and Guerrero. Unbelievable beer selection and high-end bar food.
