REVIEW - Toast

I had the pleasure recently of having breakfast at Toast Uptown. Toast is located on Laurel Street at the old Laurel Street bakery location.
Toast is less than a year old, and word has is definitely out on how good it is. I knew to arrive early, or I'd have a wait in front of me. We arrived at 9:30 and immediately found 2 seats at the bar. The regular tables were all full, one with a party of 12 (tables pushed together). None of the tables outside were occupied because it was still a little chilly outside.
The atmosphere at Toast is bright and cheerful, albeit small. You're in pretty close quarters with everyone around you, but I'm fine with that. My only complaint was that it was VERY LOUD. They've put foam under the chairs and tables, but it didn't seem to be helping much. Once the large party left, it got considerably better.
I find the prices at Toast to be extremely reasonable for what you get, with entrees ranging from $10-$14, and smaller side items (like toast topped with prosciutto, honey, and ricotta, or an order of ableskivers) going for $5-$8.
For my entrée, I had the Croque Madame. It was huge and delicious, and was served with a light side salad. My BF had the hangar steak topped with tarragon aioli, served with roasted potatoes and sunny side up eggs. His meal was also fantastic.
I was really dying to try some of the ableskivers with lemon curd dip, but their portions are huge, and there was just no way.
By the time we left 45 minutes later, there were 15 people outside waiting, and all outside tables were full.
I highly recommend Toast, but you might want to go before 10 if you don't want to wait.

Yup, although it could be a nice neighborhood spot of it doesn't get too crowded. Uptown breakfast eateries seem to get stupid busy and it's hard to find a place to grab a quick bite on a weekend.

Couple ?'s:
- what is your opinion of the name / branding?
- what restaurants would you compare it to?

+1 except I wasn't that impressed with the food. It was very standard breakfast tasted like it was prepped at home. It wasn't overly expensive and had a nice ambience though.
satsuma, surrey's, and slims are still my go-tos. I do wanna try couli on Prytania, heard good things about that.

I bet I can guess R2R's opinion on the name, thus his opinion of the place.

I hate the name. I like a name that is easy to search online, that isn't one word that is very common. I also hate the name Eat for the restaurant in the Quarter.
I can't think of any place that I'd compare it to. It doesn't compare to many of the brunch spots in New Orleans because it isn't full of seafood and heavy sauces. I guess if I had to pick a comparison, maybe I'd pick Satsuma, though I've only been there once and wasn't impressed.

The jalapeno cornbread with pulled pork at Coulis is yum.

Good girl. That's the correct answer.

Seems from your review + description and a quick perusal of the menu that Satsuma is similar, maybe Merchant in the CBD as well. Not a place I would ever try (just not my kinda food) but can see it doing well with the folks wanting a little healthier breakfast / brunch option outside of the ubiquitous hollandaise repertoire of many places.

Trust me, my croque madame wasn't healthy, but damn it was good.

I've been a few times, and I really like it. The hangar steak is good stuff.
Better than Surrey's and Coulis, IMO.

Yes stalkerWise. Went there for a late lunch. Knocked it off the list but won't be back.

I was driving by and saw yall. It's my neighborhood too.
I'm a fan of Mayas from the two times I've been. Had an outstanding curry seafood thing there the other day.

Wahh?
I haven't been in over a year, but before they closed for renovations they were serving some really great (possibly over-priced) food.
