Is alligator considered meat or seafood?

I got some from a buddy and want to make alligator sauce piquant tomorrow.

It's got a backbone. I'd say meat. But I'm not of the cloth.

I would call it meat, despite what the Archbishop says. It doesn't live in water, it hunts in water. Make the piquant tomorrow and eat it Saturday.

I think it is a joke anyone feels they are in some way abstaining by eating South Louisiana seafood. Sort of miss the whole point of not eating meat when you gorge on boiled crawfish and fried shrimp.

People may also choose to abstain from seafood as a penance, as well. There is no rule that one must eat seafood on any day during Lent. People abstain from or perform things in other forms during Lent. People here seem to believe abstaining from meat is the only thing Catholics do in observance of Lent. In some cases, that's correct but in many, it's not. Fish is a symbol of Jesus; hence the seafood. Guess they didn't foresee the joys of crawfish and shrimp.

Just make the piquant, no spooky force will punish you or keep you from doing otherwise.

When in doubt, ask your Pope.

I understand that, the point of not eating red meat is to be like Jesus and go without for 40 days, well make it 5 out of 40. Make a little sacrifice. Heck I don't know many that even fast on holy days of obligation any more. Too much trouble.

Have to admit my whole like growing up Catholic I never heard anyone say they ate fried fish on Friday, and other holy days, because they thought the fish represented Jesus. Whatever puts you closer I guess.

The Pope has stepped out, I will refer to the bishop on this one.

And to take this one step futher. Looks like I can slip Bacon fat in there as well.

Per the US catholic Bishops Conference :
quote:

Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, consomme, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from animal fat are technically not forbidden. However, moral theologians have traditionally taught that we should abstain from all animal-derived products (except foods such as gelatin, butter, cheese and eggs, which do not have any meat taste). Fish are a different category of animal. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted.

If eating meat is the worst thing you did all day, you had a pretty good day

And if eating crawfish, crabs, oysters, shrimp, fresh fish or even alligator meat is the biggest sacrifice you make ... well, enough said.
