Question about Jucifer
Posted by TigerSaint1 on 7/29/17 at 1:00 pm15
Had it for the first time at Chimes yesterday, and I liked it. But I thought it had a lot of a lighter flavor than Ghost (which I like as well). Was it just this batch perhaps or is this other people's thoughts as well? Only thing I can think of was I know there was a new release for this weekend in kegs. So was it lighter tasting because it was so new?

Different malt build?
Different yeast?
Different yeast?

As in it didn't have enough time for the fermentation. I'm no brewmaster so it's just a question.

One is a DIPA and the other an IPA

Jucifer is a "regular" IPA and Ghost is a DoubleIPA. It was made to be "lighter".

Ok that makes sense, I appreciate the clarification.

There is no definitive scale, at least not that I know of, for the APA, IPA and DIPA classifications, but most people use the ABV as a guide even though ABV does not necessarily correspond with how hoppy a beer is. Jucifer, at 6% ABV, clearly falls into the IPA range and Ghost, at 8%, fits into the DIPA category. So you were right. Jucifer is not as heavy a beer as Ghost.

Jucifer is a bit of an aberration in that it's a very fruit forward IPA. Generally speaking, a DIPA will be less light and fruity than an IPA which is less light and fruity than an APA, but that doesn't always hold.

I said it was a bit of an aberration; I didn't say it was unique
And considering the history of the style, I'm not sure if citing to the last twelve months is a reasonable argument against it being an aberration.

Yep, the juice craze is all the rage. I am not tired of it yet.

It's a pretty interesting experience to get the taster flight of all the super hoppy beers on tap at Chimes right now. Amazing how different they all are in their own way.
