LBT: do you use a foam roller or anything on your legs? My hamstrings are always tight, unless I make a conscious effort to stretch every day (I don't). I've been meaning to pick up a foam roller to help with my hamstrings. Wondered if you've tried.

I have one that I've used maybe 3-4 times in the year that I've had it. I'll try using it tonight.

My hamstrings are usually tight, but not this tight. Not sure if it's from tennis or the fact that I didn't do my usual 40 minute walk Wednesday-Friday last week. Maybe a combo of the two.

Regardless, I don't stretch nearly as much as I should.

Foam rolling is amazing once you get used to it and the movements required. When I'm sore I'll use that thing on all parts of my legs and back. It really helps loosen things up, but it hurts like hell when doing it...mine has little raised areas to help dig in better instead of just being flat all the way around, so I'm sure that is why it hurts more.

it really is hard work. my abs weren't ready for a full foam rolling session the first few times I tried.

It doesn't hurt if you do it often. I foam roll daily with no pain

Have another good video for me to get into foam rolling?

Not sure exactly what I should be doing. I'd like to foam roll every day. It's just a matter of doing it. How long do you do it for? Before or after a work out? Random times?

I do it before a workout and then some nights before bed if I had a tough workout. I usually only roll my posterior muscles (back, butt, hamstrings), as these give me the most trouble.

I'll do it for 10-15 minutes. Usually 6-10 rolls on each problem area. Will continue until I feel the area loosen up.

I'll look to see if I can find a good video, but mainly just fish for tight spots. If it's hurting (hopefully you can distinguish between good & bad pain), then it's prob working.

Don't be afraid to use variations. Like leaning to one side while rolling puts a little extra pressure there to help bust up the tissue. You can also cross your arms like a bear hug, or raise them overhead, and roll out that way. Doing that just helps put your muscles in different positions.

Keep in mind, if you're having back pain, proper hips & hamstring mobility is likely your key to ridding that pain.

Don't just roll the hammies, but lay flat and take an exercise band or a belt & stretch them.

If you have trouble sitting in the bottom of a squat, while keeping your feet planted on the ground, you have tight hips & this is putting stress on your lower back. What I like to do is take something heavy, like a kettle bell or dumbbell, sit down in a squat & just hang out there as long as possible. Use the weight for counter balance. Sit until it's uncomfortable, then do it 3-5 more times. It will likely be painful much like the roller, but if you are consistent with it it will pay dividends.

If you can get into that squat without falling over, grab on to a pole & ease your way down and hold on to that. The key, again, is to keep all points of your feet on the ground.

When you are done, bang out 10 air squats or so and see how you feel. If there is still tightness, get back on it.

I'm not a Dr or anything but I have tight hips from sitting all day, & they really are my key to feeling limber & loose.

Impossible for me unless I hold onto a pole.

Was doing a good job practicing loosening them up by doing somewhat of what you said above. Just need to do it every day.

There most likely are ankle flexibility issues too. But no shame in grabbing the pole. Next time you do it, look down at about where your shoelaces are. Do you see your ankle flexing like you are putting it thru shock??

It can be remedied, like you said, by doing it every day. Right now I'm currently doing a program where I accumulate 10 minutes in the bottom of a squat every other day, for instance.. My hips are still tight but they are light years from where they were 3 years ago. It's a continuous work in progress

Are you barbell squatting at all? How does that go if so?

No can't do any barbell squats. Never could in HS either, my heels come off the ground as soon as I start to drop my hips in the slightest.

My gym has a machine nearly similar to the one pictured below (except with free weights) that I use for my "squats". I'm able to drop my hips low enough to squat and keep my heels on the platform since it is at an angle.

ETA: forgot I had a picture of the actual equipment on my phone.

Fun!! When are you going? How old are you? Is that weird to ask?

Work is draining my brain this week/month. I'm buying more tennis skirts to distract myself. I need to stop. It's kinda ridiculous.

I gotta get my tennis gear up soon. Might do that this weekend, don't have much planned.

October 8th weekend since LSU is playing in Gainesville and I don't feel like going there. I hear that's a terrible trip.
