I posted this on the Political Talk Board Yesterday, but it's probably worth noting on the food board as well

A series of FB posts and email newsletters from the president of the company.
FB Post Link
quote:

For the rest of you, you just voted for an openly racist candidate for the presidency of the United States of America. In your defense, most of you did so without thinking of the consequences of your candidate's racism because, for most of you the heartbreaking destruction racism causes has never been anything you or your loved ones have had to experience. But the thing is elections have their consequences. This is no longer sixty years ago. Whether any of us like it or not, for the next four years the 80% of this country who did not just vote for an openly racist candidate are going to treat you like you are the kind of person who would vote for an openly racist candidate.

I guess? A great number of bars, restaurants, and other businesses in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans area posted about being depressed over the election results and advertising to come get a pick-me-up the next day. They didn't go full out like Penzeys, but a business's political views don't stop me from going there. Each and every one of us supports businesses with owners who feel the same way this Penzey's person feels. We just may not know it. So what?

But, when I find out I won't bother to support him b/c he is against me and what I believe. It's not a one way street here.

competition

I've used Penzey's and Spice House and honestly, I'll probably still use both. I've gotten wasted and posted dumb shite online before. I get it.

It's a food product company very publicly addressing (insulting) their customer base. I think it is quite valid here on the food board. I wish they'd keep their political opinions to themselves as well, but they decided to put it out there for public consumption multiple times.

Business owners shouldn't be posting this kind of stuff unless they want to lose customers, but I'm sure there are people you still associate with in your life who are against what you believe.

I rarely order form Penzey's, but I get the emails. I don't read most of them, though I did notice they hit on some issues from time to time. Sort of tamed my enthusiasm for the company whether I agreed or not. Cooking is a hobby and stress reliever that I don't wish to mix with politics or other issues.

Any company that dabbles in religion or politics deserves their fate. If you alienate half your client base you deserve to go out of business. I never discuss race, religion, politics, sexual identity with clients.

Now, can we stick to stuffing our faces on this board?

My outlook is that I've never given 2 thoughts to Penzey's political stances before and I'm not going to going forward. Just make sure the spices are still good. Their Trinidad lemon garlic marinade is like crack

I won't do business with Penzey's, anymore. They were my go to, but I'm sure there are other companies that are just as good.

I think most people who are boycotting Penzeys don't care that Bill Penzey supported Hillary Clinton. But that's not what he said in his newsletter. In fact, I don't think he even mentioned who he voted for. It might have been Mickey Mouse, for all I know. What he said is that anybody who voted for Donald Trump is a racist and needs to repent by donating to the ACLU or the SPLC - two leftist organizations. It's OK to be loud and proud about who you voted for, but don't call everyone who disagrees with you a name and tell them they need to make up for it at the sacrificial alter of the ACLU.

I just got an email from Penzey's which I normally would have routinely deleted, but I opened it due to this thread. He doesn't much care about losing customers. That's fine. He's got the right to say what he wants and I doubt in the big picture he'll lose much, but I'm done which isn't a great loss at all. I don't care one way or the other who he supported. I simply don't believe it serves a useful person to offend folks in either side of the aisle. It won't help anything. It's divisive. I object to that and the name calling.

Here's the e-mail.
