Looking to buy a pellet smoker and am just getting different opinions from online "reviewers". Looking for any firsthand opinions on what ya got or wish you had done different.

Don't know anyone who owns one personally and thought I might get some first hand info here.

I am looking for something well made that will last a while.

Will post food porn after purchase

Yoder YS640 pricey but versatile and well built will last a long time, used by a bunch of comp teams.

I have a Traeger that I brought from Costco about 3 years ago. The new ones have a pellet dumper. Costco has really good deals. They give you a cover, cookbook, some rub. Pellets are available.

Some people don't like Traeger and think they're cheap. I wouldn't have a problem buying another.

I'm going to fire it up later for chicken and sausage.

Are you using it personally or commercially? cause that thing is a beast.

Have you owned a ys480 or ys640?

does it work well as a "grill" or is it strictly a smoker?

Will it sear a steak?

I don't own one, however when I moved on from my WSM , I got down to the YS640 or a Backwoods G2 Chubby. Living in NE Ohio, I went with the Backwoods, thought it would hold temp better in winter being insulated. I was really impressed with the build quality of the Yoder though.

i used it for both. can put 7 full packers on it or a small grocery stores stock of pork butts. if you dont need or anticipate cooking that much in a day, go with the 640. 480 would be too small in my opinion. only problem i had was making sure it didnt loaded with grease.

I am leaning towards the YS640, I just hate the fact that I can't find a local vendor.

I don't mind the price that much but is quite a lot for a sight unseen internet purchase, all in it is around 2 grand for a grill that I have never laid eyes on or touched.

I have a Mak 2 star general and love it. It has the best controller on the market. You can program it to smoke at 190 degrees for 3 hours then automatically bump the temp up to 235 until internal meat temp hits say 190. It also has a side smoker for lower temp smokes like cheese. I have had mine about 5 or 6 years and have had zero problems. Put a ton of pellets through it and working on my second pallet of pellets now.

Read the reviews of Mak smokers you will not find a negative one.

Yes, I've cooked other items and it does just fine. I have a weber gas that I usually use though and I wouldn't try to sear with the Rec Tec. You could probably turn the heat up and throw a black iron skillet if you really wanted to but probably isn't the best way.

I've read good things about the Camp Chef pg24. Looking to buy my first pellet smoker. Anyone know how this compares?

Im looking for a pellet grill and trying to keep it below $700. Trying to decide between the Rec Tec Mini and the Green Mountain Daniel Boone (non wifi). Both have good reviews on Amazing Ribs but leaning towards the GMG because it has a slightly larger cooking area. Can both of these fit a whole packer brisket? Any reason to upgrade to the wifi version of the GMG? Is one of these more reliable or easier to clean than the other? TIA

from the looks of it, the Rec Tec may have a hard time putting in any good sized brisket. 22"x 15" cooking space isnt a lot.

as far as wifi goes, get it if you want to control it from your couch.

Thanks for the advice. Does the wifi app work from anywhere? Getting off the couch doesn't bother me but being able to control from my phone while im running errands or at the local watering hole sounds sweet.

Also, do you think a brisket would fit on the GMG? Never cooked one before so not sure what size smoker I would need.
