"Dr. Hoptagon bottle release in all markets this Wednesday. Prepare your tastebuds."

Per their Facebook page.

I haven't been able to head over to their tap room to try this release. Any opinions on it? I'll pick up a few bottles of it on Wednesday/Thursday.

FBD guys say it's not quite as good as Firestone Walker's black IPA but it holds it own against it. That speaks volumes.

It's great. More of like a hoppy stout than an IPA but I loved it. Will be loading up on some bottles come wednesday.

Nicely balanced black IPA. Hard to find any deductions. Definitely better than Tin Roof's black ale.

I was there Friday and did a side by side tasting of Firestone Walker Wookey Jack and bottled Dr Hoptagon. Everyone had slightly different opinion but they were basically 2 different beers. Wookey was more on the IPA side with hints of roastedness. Dr Hoptagon is more of a silky roasted beer with a slight bite of hops on the back end. I honestly love this beer and can't get enough of it.

Yes it will be in Nola, BR, Lafayette, and not sure where else they'll make it to.

Also should see it on tap at several locations. Bottled version is slightly smoother and silkier. Keg has a little more bite.

I love this beer.

Most version use debittered black malt or something similar to get the color without the flavor. That's typically what's thought of as a black IPA, or cascadian dark ale, or whatever you want to call it. Roasted/coffee/chocolate flavors typical of stouts and porters are usually muted. As the style has evolved you have seen some more porterish/stoutish varieties popping up.

We did a tasting Friday between Wookey jack, Hoptagon on draft and hoptagon out the bottle.

All amazing beers. Slightly different all the way around.

I've always gotten roasted notes from black IPAs like Stone SSR or Wookey Jack.

I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised for an IPA to taste like a hoppy stout or porter.

Me saying a hoppy stout wasn't a knock on the beer. I found Hoptagon more roasty and malty compared to SSR or Wookey which is more hop forward. Not a knock on either beer, black IPA's are my favorite style. Love them all.

I'm sure the usuals will carry it. Hoping for rouses personally since they may be a tad cheaper.
