In search of a more full bodied flavor I've been packing down my dark roast grinds into the gold mesh filter I have. I know this is dumb but I perceive a difference in the flavor. Maybe placebo, but I don't understand how it couldn't work. The more compact the longer it steeps through, the more flavor extracted...
I got the idea from a Vietnamese restaurant where they steep the dark-ass coffee through those little cups. I asked why it had the metal press on top and he said you could adjust the flavor and steep time by pressing down on the metal disk which sat on top the grounds. I pressed mine and it seemed to work.
I want to create some sort of metal press I could leave in the pot that would serve the same purpose. But I'll likely end up poisoning myself or getting a giant kidney stone. Oh well. Tell me I'm just obsessing about something that doesn't do a damn thing. Please.
