Interesting. Big fan of Domenica, Pizza Domenica and Shaya.

Now, it appears that the high-octane, James Beard Award-winning partnership is coming to an end. On Monday (Sept. 18), Shaya told NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune, "We are in negotiations to purchase Shaya restaurant from the Besh Restaurant Group. And I hope that a deal can be done soon."

A spokesperson for the Besh Restaurant Group confirmed that Shaya and the company are "parting ways." The spokesperson said Domenica and Pizza Domenica are not part of the negotiation.

Shaya said he has an ownership stake in both Domenica and Pizza Domenica, but would not comment further on negotiations still underway.

I'm guessing some folks still associate him as one of Besh's guys, so I imagine he wants to be in control of his own thing

The Beard Awards, which are held in Chicago in May, exposed a growing rift between Shaya and Besh, himself a Beard winner.

An Instagram post from Besh's account congratulating Engel on his victory was tagged #beshrestaurantgroup. Shaya responded to the post, "shaya restaurant group."

Shaya has since periodically used the tag #shayarestaurantgroup on social media – and will presumably continue to, as he tries to build on his success on his own.

I'm sure whoever is writing the article probably has in depth knowledge, but on the surface that kind of comment doesn't seem all that catty

Closing on Friday and Saturday night would probably be an interesting investment opportunity.

Serving pork and non-kosher food is probably another hurdle they would be interested in eliminating.

I always thought it was Israeli food and not necessarily Jewish food

he has probably had pressure from the Jewish community to make it an all Jewish affair,

wut

my guess is that it is Besh funded, but has gained enough popularity that Shaya wants to separate. Besh group likely has too much say/control. Shaya is the headliner of the Besh group currently, so im sure they are going to make Alon pay a hefty price to break off.

i dont think they give a shite about the Jewish community

also Alon has been traveling a ton doing popups and demos nationwide. I bet he wants to expand to another city, say NYC. He may not be able to do that under their current agreement

I don't know if the Shaya concept works in NYC the way it does in NOLA.

But yes, I do think he wants more creative control as Alon Shaya himself. Having a home base restaurant is probably a major part of that.

Did i ever claim this was fact? I thought did a decent job of presenting it as another dumb guess on Tigerdroppings.

Get a grip man.

All speculation below.

It all feels very cliched "master-apprentice". Alon has
become a brand largely because of Besh. Shaya's skills made the restaurant take off, but the success would have been difficult without Besh's identifying and grooming him, and a lot of that is on the restaurant management end (not necessarily Besh himself, but the business people).

From an outside perspective, Shaya the restaurant has always looked like Alon's baby with Domenica and Pizza Domenica as his stepping boards. His successes there were probably the only reasons the Besh group invested in Shaya the restaurant. With his standalone restaurant success, I don't see how the breakup is anything but predictable. Alon's put a lot of time in and probably, as others have said, is ready to spread his wings and move on.

Maybe Besh feels Alon is ungrateful. Grateful doesn't have to mean verbally felating Besh, but the Besh group may have been feeling Alon hasn't been pulling his weight for the group outside of Shaya.

A lot more goes into making a successful restaurant than just great cooking skills. This board has certainly seen awesome chefs fail before because they lacked other necessary skills. The Besh group has those skills and probably feels Alon has undervalued that influence on his success. Alon probably feels they've made 10-fold on him already and he wants a chance to be on his own.

I wonder what bearing this will have on the restaurant. Not having a large management team that Besh Group brings I'm sure will eventually show. Being a one location restaurant and having the owner promoting across the nation could bring on some issues for sure.
