New Orleans - Help/Recommendation

We will be in New Orleans for a wedding in April. We'll be staying at The Westin in Canal Place. The Wedding is at Latrobe's on Royal. I know its a few months away, but I'd like to ask for some recommendations just in case I need to secure reservations this far in advance.
I haven't been to New Orleans since 2010 for the NCAA Tournament - Texas vs. Wake Forest game. Honestly, it was short trip and everything we did was centered around the UT Texas Ex program and the Basketball tournament. Prior to that, my other New Orleans experience consisted of the 1995 Texas-Virginia Tech Sugar Bowl. I'm not too sure we ventured outside of the French Quarter.
Now, the wedding is Saturday and thankfully we do not have to attend the rehearsal dinner. I've extended the trip from arriving Thursday at 7:50 and leaving Monday morning at 10:35. We are open to all food suggestions. My few requests...I'd like to get out the French Quarter as much as possible. I love the French Quarter and it's truly a unique and beautiful place, but I've seen it and I feel I've gotten the grasp of it. We'd like to do a spread approach and try multiple restuarants and bars in various neighborhoods.
One last suggestion which ties us back into the French Quarter...can you reccomend a really good, local watering hole that I can frequent while my wife takes time to get ready? For a wedding, it could literally be a couple of hours...something low-key. I don't want drunk tourists double-fisting daquiris stumbling around me.

shite, one more last thing. I'm a soon to be retired architect. While I never worked in the residential sector, I still love looking at and admiring beautiful homes. Can you recommend various, walking neighborhoods? I mentioned earlier that I was familiar with St. Charles. That's not to say we won't ride up and down it again, but any streets or walking tours is welcomed with open arms. Thanks.

If you are staying at the west in canal place you could hop over to the St. Lawrence for drinks while the wife gets ready.
As for food suggestions, what are you looking for. Two of the best new restaurants are Shaya and Peche. One is upscale Mediterranean and the other is seafood. Both are outstanding and need reservations in advance.
Cochon and herbsaint would be good dinner spots and not terribly far from where you are. Take an uber as it's probably a bit to far to walk.
I don't know anything about walking tours but all the areas around st. Charles past Jackson avenue have great homes to admire. I'm sure there are walking tours for this, I've just never done it. You could probably just drive up and down the streets if you rented a car. Also stay between st. Charles and magazine. Areas below magazine toward the river get sketchy in many spots.

You could definitely walk here from the Westin. Not a bad walk at all.
Go to dinner at Commander's Palace one night.

Chuck's
As far as walking the Lower Garden District would be your best bet. DURING THE DAY you could walk anywhere between St.Charles and Magazine. Id start at Jackson and make my way up river.
Edit: Commanders is right there between Prytania and Magazine, good area to walk if you did brunch there.

If you come to NOLA and don't eat at Commander's Palace, shame, shame. It is one of the few places that lives up to its hype. Also, Mr. John's is a good steak place.
Walk magazine street during the day time. there are plenty of bars to walk in and out of.

I think for people who like architecture, I would recommend hopping on the Ferry and going to Algiers point, it's the second oldest neighborhood in the city and it's pretty compact, there are a couple of decent places on the point to catch a bite to eat, and it's very walk-able and contained.
You see a lot of homes of a variety of styles.
Another great neighborhood is the Garden District. I would super highly recommend going to Commander's Palace, then taking a self guided walking tour around that area. Lots of old mansions and grand houses, again a very walkable and safe neighborhood, plus Commander's is a must eat restaurant in the city.
Street car ride down St. Charles, get off at Washington on the way back from Uptown/Carrolton and walk around.
To go to Algiers you simply take the ferry from Canal street, as soon as you get off you just walk that area. At the ferry terminal they have walking maps of the area.

Chart Room or Jimani are a close walk from your hotel.
for your walk, i dont know if you've seen the French Quarter during the day, or just Bourbon Street at night. But the outskirts of Bourbon St has some nice architecture, esp towards the residential end of the FQ.

If you are saying walking around Uptown and the Garden district during the day is unsafe then you are nuts.

Pass on Commanders and walk 3-4 blocks down Washington to Coquette. Beautiful bar and superior food. Others are correct, you can walk around the Garden Dist. which is the most stunning neighborhood in town.
If you want another neighborhood, Rue 127 (Mid-city) has been hitting on all cylinders or Mariza (Bywater) would be great choices.

Wasn't it just last summer that people were being robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight by people on bikes.
To reiterate, yes it's safe for the most part, but I'd always be wary of who was around and approaching me

I suggest you consider Saturday or Sunday brunch at Commander's and then a walk around the area after, perhaps.
I would look into Gautreau's as an option for dinner. Neighborhood excellent restaurant. Peche would be good for a lunch in the Warehouse District. You might make a late dinner Thursday night at Emeril's in the Warehouse District. There are so many options.
If you want cuisine like crawfish bisque, etouffee etc..., consider lunch on Friday at Bon Ton downtown.

I don't think it's someone who posts here. I think it's a serial down voter who gets some thrill out of it and it makes the down and up voting even less valuable than it already is. I don't notice unless someone else brings it up. Honestly, I don't know why people pay any attention to up and down votes.

I usually don't wither, I just noticed it a lot lately on this board.
No biggie, like you got a downvote and your post was solid.
I can understand the downvotes I got for saying NOLA is safe during the daytime for a couple, (not everyone will agree) but people being downvoted for recommending Peche or Commanders.
(though I do disagree with the person who put Rue 127 over Commander's, especially after my favorite waitress there, Ashley, left to have a baby)

It doesn't matter whether the post is solid or bad when I don't know who is voting or exactly why it was down voted. People downvote in the WFDT thread routinely. It's just silly since you don't know who is voting, in my opinion.

I think the reason Wise gets downvotes is because people are concerned for his health. It can't be healthy to eat tacos every night.

I was pretty sure he was the one down voting everything. Seems like his style

FYI- I just downvoted you.
I recommended Coquette over Commander's, because it's better.
Rue was for a change of neighborhoods at another time.
