Soapstone

I love the look and feel of thick soapstone. After a few years of occasional mineral oil, ours has a nice look that is almost maintenance free.

Concrete

Luh my concrete. It can stain but usually a Mr. Clean eraser pad can get it out.

And its possibly the worst material to be used in a kitchen for countertops.

Why do you say this?

You do 2" everywhere except for around your sink? I did 1.5" to match up to a pre made stainless sink, but big honking 2"ers everywhere else. I made mine black, and even though it looks great where not much food prep goes on, it etches pretty good around my stove area. I like the lighter color you have.

concrete chips

I've had mine for ten years and no one's managed to chip it yet. I can't imagine a kitchen getting more use or abuse (clumsy wife who loves to cook)...so in not really sure where this information comes from. I think you'd play hell chipping it on purpose.

do you put anything on your concrete? I'm about to resand mine because it has a few acid stains and whatnot

just not sure what to put on it afterwards

I guess I could call the guy that installed it 5 years ago to see what he put on it originally

Now I'm checking into granite and don't like the patterns, to me most of it looks like dog vomit.

Amen. Why so many people put this ugly shite in their house is beyond me.

I'm no fan of brown & mid-tone figured granite. It's often the least expensive option, so it is all over the place....from renovated Hilton Garden Inn bathrooms to tract houses, to high-end "modular houses" (ie, new doublewide trailers).

People are sheep. They want what the neighbors/cousins/friends have.

Or maybe they follow whatever trend is spoon-fed to them by builders and HGTV. People who have those counters are the same kind of people who put this hideous shite in their house:

I don't have any strong feelings on the countertop issue, but holy shite is that obnoxious. What happens after the divorce?

No but I should. There is a beeswax product my guy tells me to use but I'm lazy. Supposed to wipe with soap and water to clean, but I use 409.

As I said earlier, it can stain, but you really have to try to make it stain. I view the imperfections as character.

With all the bacteria in raw foods, it would be the last place I would want it in my kitchen.

The Center for Disease Control nor the Institute for Occupational Safety Control have found any evidence to show that granite countertops harbor bacteria. Yet any countertop material, including granite, may harbor bacteria when they are kept moist and food debris is allowed to stay for long.
