Going to get a bottle as a show of appreciation for someone who did me a huge solid when my Mom passed in November.

I've been informed they like red wine, and I want to get them a bottle. A GOOD bottle. Even though I know she probably drinks meh stuff that she gets from wherever, I need to make sure that when she asks around, people tell her that I did her right.

Thing is, I rarely drink, and have absolutely zero knowledge in this area. So I turn to you. I'll be purchasing this in New Orleans, so if anyone has a good recommendation, telling me where to get it would be awesome.

Thank You in advance for your help

I would pop in to Keife & Co. on Howard. Speak with John or Jim, tell them the occasion and give them your price range. They'll set you up.

I don't have a specific recommendation but I usually go to places like Dorignac's, Elios, or Martin's and get recs from one of their managers. It is very difficult to randomly pick one wine, but I do really like Orin Swift wines.

eta: Keife and Co. is a very good rec as well. Just out of the way for me so I don't think about it.

For a not too terribly expensive good bottle of red wine, I like Stag's Leap.

The best value for a GOOD bottle right now is the Caymus 40th anniversary. It's about $60 and is a 96pt Robert Parker.

you cant go wrong with Duckhorn or Decoy in my opinion.

Currently my favorite is St. Supery Cabernet

I also have been drinking the hell out of some Cameron Hughes wines. The 432 cab is delicious.

Acquistipace's in Covington is my favorite because i like the younger generation who travel to the vineyards in Europe to bring back affordable Bordeauxs.

American: Jordon Cab is always good; Caymus is very pricey (100) but excellent. A gift of Caymus makes a statement that you care about the giftee. Less pricey: Sinsky Pinot Noire. Turley Zinfendel.

Anyone at Martin's or keife will be able to help you get a good bottle. Chapellet is great. Zichichi is really good if it is in stores.

So as I'm not a dick...sorry for your Mothers loss. Mine is still alive, albeit with one foot in the grave and one foot on a banana peel and Dad....well he's making gravel.

Not sure why it matters about her asking around but I would venture to guess this is not the way to go about this. Why worry about what she thinks?

That said don't try to give her something that everyone knows about and is expensive. Find a unique boutique wine and give her a bottle or two. Doesn't have to be expensive, just different and something she probably hasn't had.

Just get online and look for:

Beau Vigne
Burgess
Shypoke
Neal Family
Frank Family
Rivers Marie

Order whatever floats your boat.

God bless Mom and people that do solids for Mom.

I sent a friend some wine as a thank you. He's a pretty big red wine drinker and knows more about them than I do. I think the board gave me some suggestions. Anyway, rather than one really expensive bottle, I gave him 3 recommended bottles so he could try them. I ordered from a place LA recommended. Turns out my friend had never tried any of the wines and one of them became his favorite. He loved trying out multiple wines. I sent them during the holidays so I included champagne. His wife loves champagne.

Found my order. I ordered from K&L Wines. ETA: I ordered this in 2012 and I'm not a big wine drinker nor am I educated on wines. I do like the champagne very much, though.

1 2008 Lagier Meredith Mount Veeder Napa Valley Syrah @ $44.99

1 2011 Orin Swift "The Prisoner" Napa Valley Red Blend @ $37.99

1 2009 Ormes De Pez, St-Estèphe @ $39.99

1 Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne @ $44.99

The Orin Swift was his favorite. I think Martini may have recommended that one.

This has been one of the most consistent best-priced wines on the market for the last like 15 years. Very good stuff.

This however I think is priced based off of their marketing campaign rather than quality.

I'll be the dissenter and say that, to my tastes, Caymus sucks.

Decoy is great for a $25 bottle, Justin is also great in that range. If you want to go a bit higher I've always liked Paraduxx

Cay us is not a favorite high end of mine. For my taste, would much rather uncork a big old Silver Oak.

Caymus and Silver Oak are great examples of wineries that were instrumental in making the Napa Valley what it is today. At some point however they departed sharply from the style of wine they made when they began. Old Caymus and Silver Oak can be as good as it gets. More recent vintages are higher alcohol and built for immediate consumption. They're both still popular for sure, but not my style.
