If you want to get into ceramic style cooking without spending $1,000+, look at the Char-Griller Akorn.

I personally don't have one, but they get decent reviews, cook similar to a Big Green Egg/Komado Joe for at least a third of the price. They won't last forever and some of the parts are a bit cheap. But it's a very lid value for an entry ceramic style grill.

The lid and body consist of approximately one inch thick insulation wrapped in steel. Outside is powder coated and inside is porcelain coated. It's actually much more durable than the more expensive ceramic smokers due to it's steel construction.

Get a 26" Weber kettle with a slow n sear xl. You also can get the slow n sear griddle.

This is the correct answer. I also have a BGE which is great, but it is NOT a smoker. Sure you can rig it to smoke, just like I can rig my screwdriver to be a chisel, but a chisel does a better job at chiseling.

Then you are doing it wrong

You smoke with indirect heat not direct heat. Putting a deflector plate on the egg doesn't make it indirect heat. The fire is still under the meat. You don't get much smoke.

Buy a cheap offset smoker, weber smokey mounain bullet, or barrel for better results and save $500-$600

Where do you think the fire is in a barrel? If you aren't getting enough smoke with a BGE, that's a you problem.

BGE and other kamados are great smokers. Can hold low temps for 12+ hours. You also have the versatility of high temp cooking . The only grill you'll ver need.

It doesn't generate much smoke which is why the pictures people post here of meat theyve "smoked" on a green egg don't have much of a dark bark. I've eaten ribs and brisket off bge and it tastes burnt/overcooked with almost no bark or smoke flavor.

BGE is a good grill, shitty smoker.

Google barrel smoker and let me know how many results you go through before you get to a set up like that.

You can generate as much or as little smoke as needed on a ceramic. If you have trouble doing this it is on you.

BTW, no I do not own a BGE.

Barrel and weber smokey mountain have a massive water pan, mutliple grates, and an extra 1-2 feet of distance between the fire and meat

BGE is small and only has room for a deflector plate, which is you are eating a tough, burnt hunk of meat

My Pit Barrel has none of that, and it gets plenty of smoke on every cook.

Sounds like you should mod your barrel for more grates to hold a water pan so you aren't drying out the finished product. That's on you not me.

Why would I do that when I get juicy meat with good bark the way it is?

Yep those BGEs suck so bad this man uses them.

BTW that broke down pork butt I posted on page 1 was done with my BGE, It has a smoke ring and the bark is pretty damn dark.

That's a $400-$500 offset combo. His budget is $600. Good luck finding a BGE and mount in that range.
