You are all missing out Rice is and always will be better and more consistent out of a rice cooker than on stove top.

Rice cookers are un American? They used to be a "must have" Cajun wedding gift, back in the day.

They're great for keeping rice warm when people are eating at different times, or there's a holiday meal and you need to keep the rice in a holding pattern. My first rice cooker was a wedding gift, made by Hitachi. It lasted the first 25 years of marriage, but they don't make the same kind anymoe. Now I use a cheap Wal-Mart one, but I also have a larger Hitachi that I got from my mother that I can use when I'm feeding a larger group.

I think I'm going to look for my old Hitachi style one on eBay.

I have the cheapola Rival sold for about $20. I only ever use it if I'm feeding a crowd and need to keep rice warm for a prolonged period of time. I just make it on the stovetop for ordinary use. 1.5 cups of water to a boil w/1 cup of mahatma long grain, fat pinch of salt, clap on a tight fitting lid, turn heat down as low as it will go, and wait 2 mins. Perfect every time.

A pot with a good lid.
Geees.

People make rice cooking way too hard.
Inch of water over rice.
Boil.
Turn low.
Leave top on 20-30 mins.

Perfect
Everytime

I have one that mostly use to steam vegetables.

For rice....

Put a pot of water to boil 8 cups of water minimum for 2 cups of raw rice.

When the water comes to a boil dump rice in

Set timer for 18 minutes

Stir every five minutes or so

Drain rice when timer goes off.
