My boss sent me down here to see a few customers in the McAllen, Brownsville and Laredo area. Any recommendations on where to eat would be greatly appreciated.

I've got to spend an afternoon in Corpus Christi tomorrow and San Antonio Friday so if anyone knows that area also I would appreciate the help.

I'm just not very familiar with this region of Texas and don't trust Yelp or Trip Advisor because tourist appear to be the ones writing the recs.

There's a really good steakhouse down there. Name escapes me at the moment but I'll check on it for you.

Edit ...

Santa Fe (and not your typical chain, owned locally).

Santa Fe for best steak

Palenque Grill for mexican/tex-mex

Salt for casual, but still good non-mexican

Delia's for Tamales

Dirty Al's for seafood. Not amazing, but the best they have.

My guys down in McAllen love the Blue Onion, but I haven't been. The Office is another one of their favorite spots.

SALT was awesome when I was down there a few weeks ago. Sit at the kitchen bar and watch them cook. They'll give you tastes if you tell them it's your first time.

I also recommend Santa Fe Steakhouse and Salt. Last time I went, Salt had a tobacco infused creme brulee. Pretty unique.

But the best meal I ever had in McAllen was about a month ago at a place called El Divino. Not only is their food top notch (try the sides of brussel sprouts and their roasted cauliflower), they have a cigar bar, and they serve Pappy (reasonably priced). They also have a nice cocktail served tableside where the waiter torches a cedar plank and a cinnamon stick, turning a rocks glass on top to capture the smoke, and then pouring in your choice of rye. This was easily one of the best cocktails I have ever had.

Another one worth looking into is Patio on Guerra

All of these above listed places are better than anything you're going to find in Laredo, Brownsville, and Corpus Christi.

The only thing I would say about Santa Fe is to make sure the steak you get is what you think it is. We were in there one time and the bone in ribeye was about 1/2" thick. It was more in the thin style in Mexico than how it is cut in the USA.

Santa Fe has an awesome FILET ESPRESSO:
Tenderloin filet encrusted in espresso, baked, and puddled in a mildly spicy ancho pepper sauce

It left me speechless at first taste. The bartender approached and offered to pair it with a cocktail. I asked him what he had in mind. He said it was going to be a coffee based cocktail with mezcal, Ancho Reyes liqueur, agave nectar, and Jerry Thomas bitters. I took him up on it, and that bastard delivered one of the best cocktail pairings I ever had.

Get some fajitas anywhere you go in the valley. I promise you it will be the first day of the rest of your life.

Odd that I just had this conversation with my wife. She is regularly in McAllen and couldn't be more complimentary of Salt...

I second Palenque and Delia's

If you are looking for a place to drink, Grain to Glass has about 32 craft beers on tap plus a good bit of bottled beer as well.

I thought I was going to be eating solo tonight but a customer decided he wanted to discuss our business together in more detail. Basically this means I have the corporate expense account and he wanted a good steak on my companies dime. Got a good order so it was worth it!

What you said is exactly what I had. Sat at the bar also. That was a very good meal and cocktail!

Hard to sell Corpus on anything to be honest. My places are in Port Aransas. About 30 minute drive from Corpus. Kody's and Giggity's. Kody's laid back counter service and we bring everything out to you. Garlic Fish, Tuna Tacos and Crab Stuffed Jalapenos would be my go to. Giggity's Full service live music 7 nights a week. Smoked Amberjack Crostini's, Chorizo Fires, Grilled or Fried Fresh Black Drum.

Lived in the valley for a while. Best tacos I have ever eaten were at Taqueria Rios in San Jaun. It sure aint fancy but the tacos are legit. Make their own flour tortillas, When anyone I know comes back from the valley I have them bring 12 flour and 12 corn tacos. Getting hungry just thinking about them.

I had fajitas Monday and Tuesday at Ninfas on Navigation and El Tiempo in Houston. If there are better fajitas then that out there then I seriously need to tell my boss I want to cover Texas along with my other gulf coast territory.

I'm headed back up that way tomorrow. Thanks for the rec. This whole Texas gulf coast has top shelf food!

I'll give the business traveler such as myself a rec but it's not on food. There is a 2 week old Home2 Suites by Hilton that just opened and its nice. I don't think anyone knows it's open yet. I got a king suite with a separate bedroom for $87. I couldn't believe it when I saw how cheap it was on my Hilton app. It's right around the corner from the Embassy Suites so it's right in the middle of everything. Probably haven't stayed in a Hilton brand hotel that cheap in 20 years.
