Grand opening set for mid August
LSU’s North Gates area saw the opening of another bar last week. Mahony’s Irish Pub is now in its soft opening phase. This is the second location of Mahoney’s Irish Pub, which originated in Houma. The Baton Rouge iteration is in the space formerly occupied by Reginelli’s Pizzeria at 124 W. Chimes St. A grand opening is set for Friday, Aug. 14.

quote:

Mitch Rotolo of Rotolo’s Pizzeria has partnered with Brown to help develop the menu, which will consist of bar bites, craft burgers and po-boys. Mahony’s will offer nearly 150 beers. Among the cocktails, Brown highlighted the bar’s powerful hand grenade-like/punch drink called “Tiger Fuel.”

quote:

Brown told Daily Report last week that tailgating will be huge for business.

“I think we’re making the first step to bring the North Gates back to students,” he says. “I think tailgating is going to be big for us. I don’t think anyone on Chimes Street has as many big TVs.”

I always thought that building would be better suited for a bar. Interested to see if this place can stick around and gain a decent crowd.

I hope it's good and does well. If it does it won't be because of this.

A friend who went to the soft opening said they allowed smoking... major disappointment if true.

Assuming this is not a dump and ran decently well. LSU has a decently little bar scene growing on the north gates. Baton Rouge will never be Athens but this is a step in the right direction.

The only thing I can see being a problem is it being too expensive.

It's been several bars, albeit several poorly managed bars.

It's been Reginelli’s Pizzeria for as long as I can remember.

it's a pub so it's not surprising

I just hope it isn't too horribly polluted

Besides this place, what has opened up there in the past few years?

Nah. Can't have smoking and serve food in BR. Probably just friends/family at soft opening.

Depends on the place. If a certain percentage of the sales come from alcohol, you can smoke inside even if they serve food.

Ala the bulldog before they voluntarily changed their smoking policy

Dire, didn't know Louie's was a bar now.

Ah you're correct. I actually forgot that clause was in there.

It hasn't opened yet

The new bar and restaurant will feature barrel-aged and shrub-style cocktails and new takes on grilled cheese.

“It’s up in the air what we’ll be doing with small plates,” Macedo says. “The menu is definitely grilled cheese-based. We’ll also include different types of protein like brisket and smoked chicken.”

At least they want to do something different

No thanks. And with The Chimes right there, I can't see why I'd ever go anywhere else in the area.

doesn't really sound like this bar is going after a homebrew champ kind of crowd. Which considering the area

Their beer menu doesn't look too shabby. They don't have any BMC on any of their 30 taps, so I can respect that.

Were the speakers so loud they effected your hearing?

Yep, we dropped in last week. People were smoking.
It wasn't as smoky as the Bayou was. That was the smokiest bar in America. The smoke actually had mass, it was so dense.
It wasn't too bad. It was a college bar, but it was clean and the crowd was decent.
