Looking for general Austrian food and drink advice

I have a trip coming up to Austria. Going to be hitting up Salzburg, Vienna, and a small place called Mayrhofen. Austria was kind of a last minute deal and I know less then nothing about Austrian food and drink.
Does anyone have any advice on things to try or protocols to follow? I've kind of found the basics like wiener schnitzel and vienna lager, but I'm looking to branch out if possible.

Wow. I love Austria, but that´s got to do with family and all.
Food, uh, I really can´t recommend anything. It´s like this country, it´s all about sweets.
Beer, yes. Very good, unless your a beer snob.
Scenery is beautiful for the most part, as is the architecture.
People aren´t teutonic, they´re Celts.
Man, I don´t know what to say, it´s not a remarkable place.
Warm or kind Germans, may be a way of putting it.

Gruner Veltliner is their standard white wine. Dry, minerally, and a nice core of fruit. They also do very good Riesling (dry not sweet) and some oddball red wines (zweigelt and blaufrankisch). Shouldn't be all that expensive and really some very high quality products. If you need a shot of something, look for some stroh.

Uh oh
Their ´turbia´as I call it, the stuff that most Germans hate, except for the Bavarians, is good stuff. But I like earthy, unfiltered nectar.
Many don´t.
ETA We drank Bourdeaux there, and yes, there was a Riesling type, as the sommelier said. I wasn´t impressed, then again, what do I know.
I´m not big on Riesling either, my limited knowledge is that they add sugar to it (in many instances), and I prefer real wine.

Schnitzel and cabbage is good. theres a bunch of different types of schnitzel. Real goulash is also very good. it often cones with this crazy dumpling thing. Every time I have a business trip to Vienna, I get fried chicken. Austrian fried chicken is delicious. As is Kaiserschmarrn and all their streudel.

Have some original Sachertorte and coffee at tne Hotel Sacher in Vienna. Try Jaegerschnitzel instead of Wienerschnitzel. Apfelstrudel with loads of whipped cream is also good.

More like a geek. I can appreciate it all. I know what styles are in the area, so it's not like I'm looking for an IPA or dubbel. Last night I found a good beer resource and have my eye on a couple places in Salzburg. LINK

Traveling with my mother in law, so a few shots will be needed.

Will definitely try this.
