Headed to London early next year and wanted to go ahead and start looking at restaurants. True to my name, finding great food is my favorite part of traveling.

I'll post on the travel board for more general rec's, but I've gotten some absolutely stellar restaurant advice from the F&DB on my last three trips so I want to keep it going.

Haven't figured out where we will be staying yet, but we'll likely be all over the city at one point or anther. We like the small mom and pop shops, but also will hit up two or three fancy meals while we are there. Any old favorites to hit up? New up and comers to try out?

I know some places need to be booked early, so I've been looking at the fancy sit down places first. The four that have made my radar this far in my research are Ledbury, Rest Gordon Ramsey, and Alaine Ducasse. I'm not sure how to choose one from that list though, they all seem great.

So, what you got?

TIA

Barrafina. Michelin star, Spanish tapas, 3 locations, no reservations, only seating at the counter. It is spectacular, but the lines can get crazy long. If you get there early for dinner you should be fine.

Hit up GRTiger he has a thread about London too. Y'all should discover the best eats and drinks together and report back.

Ha yeah I saw GRTiger's early morning pub request and took some notes on places to try.

But that's what got me thinking I should go ahead and ask about restaurants.

My favorite restaurant in London is Rules on Maiden Lane just off the Strand a few blocks from Covent Garden. It is the oldest restaurant in town. It is an historic place with delicious food, beautiful décor and a nice bar upstairs.

St. John

Going there in September. I don't think I've ever looked forward to a meal more. That may sound extreme but it's been on my short list for about a decade ever since I heard bourdain call it his favorite place in the world.

I agree on St John. Rabbit pie. He has a great book Nose to Tail.

Get a Wimpy burger.

St John is wonderful.

What did you think of Barrafina?

It's good and if you want to eat a traditional British meal it's a good spot for that. I was more impressed on the Whole with London's international food scene. Finish your meal with a Welsh Rarebit and a Dr. Henderson.

Barrafina was better than most of the Spanish food I've had in Spain.

The wines available and the prices of those wines were stunning, even factoring in exchange rates. Drank a lot of older (06 and 05s especially) from great producers that came in around 40 pound a bottle.

Sounds like Barrafina definitey needs to be on the list. And if Bourdain says St John is where it's at, far be it for me to disagree.

Just looked at th St John website and they have three restaurants apparently. Which one are you going to?

St. John happens to be owned by the management group that owns my club, so I'm hitting them up tomorrow (today).

Keep you posted.

I had a great dinner at St John back in May.....oxheart, spleen, snails, beef mince on fried dripping bread, roasted marrowbones, crispy pork skin, all of it was great, but the oxheart made me particularly happy.

Consider staying in Southwark/Borough Market or Bermondsey if you like to eat. Borough Market is a gem, and Bermondsey is full of interesting eats and craft beer.

Sounds like you're looking for higher-end places, but for mid-range Indian and a great experience, try out Dishoom in Covent Garden. The Alfred Tennyson in Belgravia is a hell of a gastropub that almost feels high-end (of course, being in Belgravia has a hand in that). For a really cool Prohibition-era style cocktail bar, check out Nightjar in Shoreditch. Le Pont de la Tour is a really good French spot, and head to Shepherd Market for a really cool vibe with lots of bars and restaurants.

I mention the high-end places because I kno sometimes you've got to book them months in advance to get a table. So those are the ones I'm trying to get sorted out now.

But I'm definitey looking for all types of places. We will be there for a week so I plan to run the gamut on restaurants. If FDB says it's good, I'm going to check it out!

I take a train to London every third weekend or so, and I've tried most of these places twice, and some aren't the best ever but worth the experience once, or I keep going back regardless:

- Fernandez & Wells
- Quality Chop House
- Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese
- 40 Maltby St
- Smoking Goat
- Rock & Sole Plaice
- St John
- St John Bread and Wine
- Hedone
- Gymkhana
- Dean Swift (sunday roast)
- Regency Cafe (full english breakfast add black pudding)
- Quo Vadis
- Pieminister
- Azou
- Waterloo Bar (Sunday Roast)
- Otto's Restaurant
- Jose
- Brunswick House
- Pitt Cue (strange Brit interpretation of BBQ)
- Koya Bar

If I don't have a buddies place to crash, I always grab a pub accommodation. You can stay in really nice rooms above some great pubs in London. Just google it, and find one you like/where you like.

I like to recommend the Fullers Brewery tour as a must. Classic Brewery and a great tour (best part is all you can drink for an hour after the tour) The beer is better than you ever had it in a bottle back home. It's a £15 uber ride from central London
