What exactly are "select crawfish" and will they be available soon? My family is visiting in a couple of weeks, and want crawfish. I'm familiar with boiling them, but not so much with picking them out.

General crawfish question.

When will prices start to drop to "normal" average pricing?

I have no idea, but judging from his post, I'm guessing yellowfin would be the one to ask.

What do you consider normal average? Last week wholesale price was the same as it was in May of last year.

Select crawfish are the biggest, usually after being run through a grader

Select are very large crawfish and get a higher price per pound. Just go to a restaurant and have your fill or stop by a seafood shop and get some to go. It really isn't rocket science and don't worry about the size...

Thanks wickowick & yellowfin.

The family kind of wanted to have an "authentic" crawfish boil. I've actually boiled them before, but wasn't the one who purchased them. I guess I'll look for the largest ones available. The price doesn't matter so much.

It's a little early for selects but like you said if you know someone in the business they could hook you up. Retail probably not going to happen. I just might walk out my office and throw a few thru the grader to see what they yield. Happy hunting the pursuit of big crawfish can be challenging sometimes.

Where can live select be purchased between Hammond & Slidell, or within about 30 miles north of there?
