About to receive my first komado grill and have never used Lump charcoal before. Anybody prefer a certain brand? Where do you get it and how much? There seems to be tons of options.

I use royal oak primarily.

ETA: the only one I really stay away from is best of the west.

Do you use the starters or a chimney? I have always used a chimney with briquettes

No chimney. The ceramics are too efficient for a chimney. You want to slowly get to temp. If you overshoot your temp it is harder to bring it back down. I use starters and bring it to temp and hold it there. It will take some practice. Good luck.

I have the Primos, and I use the BGE brand, seems to last a long while, gets hot, and has a nice flavor...Plus it is about a mile from the house

I've use Royal Oak, BGE, and a few of the off brands and I really don't see much of a difference. I like big chunks but you need some medium and small chunks too to have a good fire. I light mine in the pit with a starter block, no chmney. It usually takes about 20-30 minutes to get the pit up to 250.

Check out this website that compares tthe different brands, LINK

I use B&B oak. You can find it on sale at academy for around $10 for a 20lb bag.

So far I've used:
Royal Oak
BGE (same as Royal Oak)
Publix
H-E-B
Central Market (upscale H-E-B)

They've all worked fine. Not sure what wood they used or process but Publix seemed to fragment quicker than the others. It also seemed to burn hotter.

One note: be sure you get a clean burn going with the lump before you put your meat on. A couple of clues will be almost clear smoke and a grayish tint to the charcoal.

My favorite is Ozark Oak. In a pinch, the BGE brand is good as well. I'm pretty sure the BGE stuff is just rebadged royal oak.

My favorite has been Wicked Good. Nice large chunks of trees, not the trash you see in Royal Oak.

Go to Naked Whiz for lump charcoal reviews.

My last two bags have come from Trader Joe's. Think I paid something like $6.99 for an 18 lb. bag.

I also like Ozark Oak.

Wicked Good Lump Charcoal is resold/rebagged as Kamado Joe brand lump charcoal.

BGE is indeed Royal Oak Lump Charcoal.

Royal oak is my go to. Last time I was at Walmart they were out so I picked up another brand that had decent reviews in the bge forum

Eta: cowboy lump. Looks like they changed it (improved) last year. Prior to that it was mostly scraps. It has worked well for me so far
