Want to have some awesome Italian food while there at end of the year. Looking for dinner recommendations espeically not to far from theater district. Tried to make reservation for Carmines but it is booked up. Any other places? Some place that isn't to far away by subway/car is good too.

That looks promising...would love a cozy place with great food where I feel I could be wacked by a mob guy at any minute ala Goodfellas.

I didnt like Marea which is White's high end, seafood focused Italian but Morini is awesome.

Carmine's is an old school red sauce joint. It's family style and it's ok but not writing home about it. I've only been to the one up on Broadway.

Other good choices listed above. And the mobsters are upscale now so go sit in the bar at Delposto. If you see someone drinking Grey Goose in a wine glass give them the high sign. Capeesh?

Venetian-style Italian. Food is above average for the area, not a tourist trap and the staff will make sure you make your curtain time.

You'll find better options if you get out of the theater district. Osteria Morini is great, as are all of Michael White's places (Marea, Costata, Afiori). Del Posto is high end white table cloth Italian in a beautiful room. It's fantastic but pricey, so know that going in. L'Artus (w. Village)i, L'Apicio (Bowery), del'anima are all great, more casual options run by the same group. Rubirosa is a fantastic jacked up red sauce joint but tough to get in to. Carbone is another jacked up fancified red sauce joint, really pricey but really good.

Been to all but L'Apicio....all were great. I enjoyed it more than my wife but L'Artus was right in my strike zone.

Another vote for L'Artusi. My wife and I and another couple just had a visit to NYC and (subtle brag) dined at both Per Se and Le Bernardin, and L'Artusi held its own in both quality and service. Outstanding place. We went at around 10 PM after a show, without a reservation, at the advice of a local. The cocktails that the girls had were apparently excellent as well.

I love L'Artusi, actually love all the places in my post , but it's probably my go to. I wanted to hate Carbone because it's just so stupidly expensive, but I had a great meal there.

Has anyone tried Esca? Was reading about it recently and looked pretty good.

Esca

It is another Batali/Bastianich take on Italian seafood.

Thanks for recommendations.

Will check out Carbone and L'artusi. Artusi looks pretty damn good, will try to make reservations for it probably in a week or so.

Strikes me as being a bit over the top with its sort of goofy schtick, but as much as everyone raves about it, I'm thinking I'd probably like to try it.
