Is tipping primarily a learned behavior?

Wondering your opinions on this because it came up in discussion recently and I never thought about it in depth.
In today's day and age with social networking, message boards like this, and 24/7 interaction with each other through some means, how do we still have people that dont tip? Basically if you have access to the internet, you should know to tip your waiters and waitresses accordingly.
Lets take out people that dont tip because of bad service, different culture, yada yada yada. Ok so thats out of the way. Im also assuming everyone knows that servers do not make a full wage and that they rely on tips.
Are people not tipping because they grew up watching their parents pay the bill and never see them leave extra money? Do they just hate to see more money coming out of their pocket? Something else?
Now to the obvious situation that prompted my original conversation. Black people are notorious for not tipping and everyone knows it. Leaving a dollar on a $100 check or not leaving anything at all. I have friends in the service industry and they all,including my black friends, pretty much dread waiting on black people because of this. How has the message not gotten out about tipping? people who dont tip are just selfish. That's pretty much all I can say without being banned. If you cant afford a tip, then you shouldnt eat out

i think it just boils down to people being good and bad tippers. my uncle is filthy rich and is the nicest guy but is seriously the worst tipper i've ever seen.

do you know why?
just wondering how that happens. he does know they rely on tips im assuming. maybe a mentality of the servers are beneath him?

I learned how to tip from my dad. He told me to leave at least 3$ for every 20$ spent. But ever since I actually joined the workforce I leave at least 20% every time unless the waitress is just completely awful

nah i don't really know why.
nah, just don't think he gives too much thought to it and just throws a couple of small bills on the table and walks out.

It's what they choose.
I choose to tip 100-150% on 2 beers at the bar because I want them to remember me when I come back.
Now, short story from Ham.
About 3 years ago a few of us were going to walkons. I was the only one 21 and I knew one of the bartenders well. Walked up to her and asked if she could take care of my 3 friends. Of course she says yes. We each have 6-8 beers and a couple shots then all close our tabs. I was broke at that time in my life and left 20-25%. As did my other friends, except one. My friend (the bartender) comes to me and says "tell your friend to go frick himself with his 50 cent tip on a 30$ ticket."
We all gave him shite and he said "her job is a joke, she doesn't need to be tipped much."
After we kept giving him shite he changed his story to "I knew y'all were all tipping good, so I didn't think I needed to."
Ever since that time me and said friend speak once or twice a year. Pissed me off.
Moral of the story, some people just fricking suck at tipping and it will never change.

It is learned for sure. People that work or have worked in the industry are going to be the best tippers in general.

It's a matter of perspective. For instance, I do not tip well unless I truly think the server did a spectacular job. I'm not tipping 18 or 20% for shitty service just because they're a waiter and that's what society has told me I'm supposed to do.
If they don't like relying on tips I suggest they either 1) become really good at their job, or 2) choose a different career path. This isn't indentured servitude, after all.

wow what a bag of shite response. i have a friend who is like this though. he is one of my best friends but i pretty much refuse to go out to eat with him.

Tipping habits definitely interest me. I was an ok tipper until I started serving. Now it's at least 20% unless the service is absolutely terrible. There are so many variables that can make the server seem at fault. I worked in the back of the house too and sometimes our ticket times would run long or food was forgotten to be started. It could also be the server's fault for not ringing it in. Most of the time it is taken out on the server's tip. If one of my tables order was screwed up, I would grab my manager and have him talk to the table. Most of the time, I would still be tipped well.
I know it's probably rude, but if someone picks up the bill when I'm eating, I always glance to see how much they tip. Rich people tend to not tip well. I also have friends that worked in the industry with me that will order shite they can't afford and the tip would suffer.
Maybe we should start some research on the psychology of tipping.

Your ex-friend is a dick of the highest order. He doesn't tip for his share of the bill as everyone else did. To add to his insult to your friend, he says that she and her job are not to be respected as it is a job beneath him. I would never respond to a phone call from him.

It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fricks in the arse on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college bullshite I got two words for that: learn to frickin' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big frickin' surprise.

People who don't tip well are bad people. They are selfish and cheap which says a lot about them. If you don't want to tip well, go to a place to eat where you don't have to. Have fun eating crap!

You sound cheap. Drink a beer at the house if you don't want to tip.
